Just A Veteran

I am a veteran. There are many like me. We are not the government's veterans, we are your veterans. Some of us gave all, but all gave some and we have known hardship, service, fear, and brotherhood in ways that most people can't even imagine. We have seen our brothers killed and maimed, and sometimes become disfigured along the way. We have taken lives for our country, and returned to our lives as your neighbors, fathers, and native sons. Our courage is undeniable, yet it remains a trait we keep in silent humility, sharing only with a fellow veteran, if at all.

We don't ask for much but there are two things we will ask if you love this country as much as those of us who have sacrificed so much, many who have given their last full measure.

Pray for those of us who remain and never, ever forget those who rest now in cemeteries all over this beautiful land and on foreign soil, and those who remain in battlefields known but to God.

We are the thousands who fought for you, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, loved ones who answered the call to protect and defend this greatest nation on God's green earth.

Kris Allen, the new "American Idol."

Kris Allen was indeed the underdog going into the "American Idol" finale on Wednesday evening, and the vibe inside the Nokia Theater was definitely in favor of the more controversial, theatrical and incredibly "out there" California native Adam Lambert.

"Adam has the potential to be a star so overall you could say he deserves to win," Simon Cowell told Tarts on Wednesday afternoon. "But this is 'American Idol,' anything could happen and we could have an upset."

And an upset for Cowell it clearly was -- the outspoken judge was the only one not to give Allen a standing ovation when he was announced the 2009 winner as determined by a record-breaking 100 million votes.

The 2009 season of FOX broadcasting's "American Idol" had it's share of open and honest Christians who shared their faith as much as possible. Not known to many viewers is the fact that two contestants held joint-bible studies and even converted people to Christ.

Kris Allen and Danny Gokey both have strong connection to their faith but it was Kris who overcame the odds set by media-hype that fellow contestant Adam Lambert would be the winner. However the millions of Christians who prayed and organized online prayer groups asking for God to intervene would have the final say.

"It wasn't about asking God to make sure he won" says a Kris Allen fan. "It's about showing America conservative principals are still very much alive"

Even with the increasing liberal tide the country seams to be taking through the media has not taken over "American Idol". Over the past eight seasons 7 out of the 8 winners have in some form openly shared their faith and held bible study.

Kris Allen shows that someone in their 20's can be traditional and conservative in today's every increasing liberal world. At the age of 23 he has been married for a few years and is active with his church community.

This year turned out to be one of the closest years where even Simon Cowell considered the "head-judge" couldn't predict the turn out. Kris Allen's debut single hits radio airwaves tomorrow (May 21) titled "No Boundaries" which has also been arranged to be pick up by many contemporary Christian radio stations.

What amazes me is that "waterboarding" continues to be classified as torture. I watch as the MSM continues to show a clip of a guy tied up being dunked in a swimming pool and this is portrayed as waterboarding.

I have been personally waterboarded twice.

The reason one is restrained is so that the towel that is put over one's face doesn't fall off when one tries to sit up. When the towel is put on one's face, the interrogator merely pours a bit of water on the towel. If you try to suck a bunch of air then, you will think you can't breathe.

In truth, there isn't enough water to drown you nor do you suffer enough lack of oxygen for you to pass out or have any bodily functions shut down. But compared to what others do to get information, this is relatively harmless.

But the thing that I am constantly amazed at is when folks, including John McCain, say we don't torture so that our guys won't be tortured. El Toro Poo Poo.

We have not fought anyone since the Germans in WWI who adhered to international standards for treatment of prisoners. So this reason is a fallacy. If people want to say that we don't use harsh interrogation techniques because the world will think less of us if we do, that doesn't guarantee that they will support us if we are chivalrous anyway.

My own feeling is that folks like Lanny Davis, Pelosi, Harman, and the like are nothing but sorry parasites that get to suck oxygen because better people than them stopped sucking oxygen in places like Tarawa, the Ardennes, Inchon, Khe Sahn, Takrit, and Helmand Province.

My wife's uncle made it through a bad night at Guadacanal with an entrenching tool he had sharpened on a rock. Davis and his ilk believe a bad night is when their toilet paper is hung backwards on its holder. And so given their sensitivities, none of them are qualified to comment or judge what is torture or not.

Pray for the Hostages

Welcome to the daily prayer service offered by the members of Pray for the Hostages. Our mission is to pray for the hundreds of men and women held captive in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Colombia, and other parts of the world.

These hostages include journalists, aid workers, civilian contractors, crewmen on ships, and some military personnel. Some of these have been recently kidnapped, others have been held for years. What they all have in common is the urgent need for prayers of protection while they await rescue from the hands of their captors.

We need to pray that God will give them the strength to endure their ordeal, and that He will save them from despair. We need to pray for their families and loved ones who must endure anxiety and uncertainty and the pain of separation. We need to pray for the leaders of nations to make wise decisions that will save the lives of these hostages without encouraging future attacks against other innocent people. And we need to pray that the hearts of those engaging in these brutal crimes will be turned away from the evil that threatens to destroy them and their victims.

Since the inception of this group earlier this summer, there have been several dramatic rescues of hostages, as well as others being released through negotiations or ransom payments. Some of these were people who had been given up for dead after months or years of no contact. This should encourage us to keep praying and never give up hope.

We have a big job ahead of us, but with God anything is possible. Let's keep praying until all the hostages are home.

Steele Says Republican Party Has 'Turned the Corner'

RNC Chairman Michael Steele says the GOP has owned up to the mistakes that caused its fall from power and is embarking on a new chapter.

Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele on Tuesday hailed the beginning of a Republican "renaissance," calling on the GOP to stop apologizing for itself and focus on winning.

Steele delivered a speech on the future of the party to state GOP chairmen gathering outside Washington for a special meeting Wednesday of the Republican National Committee. But Steele steered away from addressing the lingering internal conflicts that could hinder his call for party unity.

A small, but vocal, minority of Republican National Committee members is trying to undermine Steele's authority over party funding, and Steele told FOX News ahead of his speech that if they, do he'll step aside.

"They can contemplate all they want to, but the reality is, if they want a figurehead chairman you can have a figurehead chairman, but it won't be Michael Steele," he said.

Steele aides insist the chairman was not threatening to quit, but merely to fight to retain his authority.

The issue comes up for a vote Wednesday. For now, RNC members are expected to re-establish standards that already had been in place before they lapsed last year. Among them is a requirement that Steele have a co-signer for all expenditures above $100,000 and that a comptroller-treasurer administer funding.

Steele already had agreed to those standards. What he objected to was the possibility of increasing the powers of the comptroller-treasurer, in turn minimizing his own authority. That issue will probably be pushed off until July, but it's not going away yet.

The Republican National Committee chief is seeking to re-establish himself as the head of the beleaguered party and set its course. His speech comes after a rocky start to his two-year term that drew criticism from some longtime RNC members as well as a sustained Democratic campaign tagging conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh as the GOP's titular head.

In Tuesday's speech, Steele likened President Obama's popularity to that of a celebrity and said Republicans can't be afraid of criticizing him head-on if they want to regain their relevance.

"He's young. He's cool. He's hip ... he's got all the qualities America likes in a celebrity, so of course he's going to be popular," Steele told state party chairmen Tuesday. But "this is not American Idol. This is serious ... and we are going to take them on."

Steele said the GOP has owned up to the mistakes that caused its fall from power and is embarking on a "renaissance."

"The era of apologizing for Republican mistakes of the past is now officially over," he said. "We have turned the corner. No more looking in the rearview mirror. From this point forward, we will focus all of our energies on winning the future."

He also was opposing a resolution -- whose final wording hadn't yet been set but was expected for a vote Wednesday -- in which Republicans would rename the Democratic Party as a "Nationalist Socialist Democrat" party.

Steele and others said the party should focus its efforts elsewhere.

"I think it's stupid," Florida GOP Chairman James Greer said of the name resolution. "These are trying times. We need to be serious."

Greer and other state chairmen said Steele, who drew a loud standing ovation at Tuesday's speech, continues to enjoy strong support among most party leaders.

"Obviously there was going to be a learning curve but I certainly support Chairman Steele. I like the fact that he's going on offense," said Alabama Chairman Mike Hubbard. "I think everybody's willing to give (him) some time."

Steele is trying to steer a GOP that's out of power in the White House, Congress and a slew of statehouses across the country. The party also has no natural successor to former President George W. Bush. And the GOP is in the midst of an intense debate over its identity while facing an emboldened Democratic Party that's grown larger under Obama's leadership -- at the Republicans' expense.

Steele played down the obstacles and claimed the GOP's comeback is "well under way" in the states. But he said people in Washington don't recognize it yet.

"Republicans may be the minority party at the moment, but we represent the ideas and concerns of the majority of Americans," Steele said. "Candidate Obama was very moderate in his views, but President Obama could not possibly be further to the far left."

Steele said the GOP will take on Obama with class and dignity, unlike the "shabby and classless way" Democrats took on Bush.

Republicans to Pelosi: Prove Your Case or Apologize to CIA

House Minority Leader John Boehner told FOX News that lying to Congress is a crime, so if Speaker Nancy Pelosi thinks agency officials did so, she needs to present evidence and have the Justice Department prosecute it or apologize for casting aspersions.

It's week two and Republicans aren't about to let House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's accusation that the CIA lied to Congress slip between the cracks.

House Minority Leader John Boehner told FOX News on Monday that "the ball is in the speaker's court." If she is accusing the CIA of lying, she "needs to come forward, either present evidence or do an apology, and let's get this behind us."

"Lying to Congress is a crime. Purposely misleading Congress is a crime. And if the speaker is accusing the intelligence community of lying to her or purposefully misleading her, then she ought to present that evidence, turn it over to the Justice Department, have them prosecute it," Boehner said.

But Boehner did not call for Pelosi's ouster.

"Let's not get too far down the road here. I'm not going to take anything off the table, but I do believe that -- that the ball is in her court. And she has to either put up or have an apology and move on," he said.

Pelosi caused a stir last week when she accused the CIA of misleading Congress about its use of enhanced interrogation techniques on terror detainees, particularly on Abu Zubaydah.

"Yes I am saying the CIA was misleading the Congress, and at the same time the (Bush) administration was misleading the Congress on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, to which I said that this intelligence doesn't support the imminent threat," Pelosi said at her weekly news conference on Thursday.

"Every step of the way the administration was misleading the Congress and that is the issue and that's why we need a truth commission," she said.

On Friday, CIA Director Leon Panetta issued a letter to CIA staff repeating his statement of a day earlier that the agency's response to congressional inquiries shows that "our contemporaneous records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully on the interrogation of Abu Zubaydah, describing 'the enhanced techniques that had been employed.' Ultimately, it is up to Congress to evaluate all the evidence and reach its own conclusions about what happened."

"I think that it's pretty clear that Mr. Panetta and the CIA believe that they were truthful in their briefings to Ms. Pelosi. There's been no reason to lie," Boehner said Monday.

According to a Rasmussen poll out on Monday, 43 percent of voters nationwide say they believe the CIA could have misled Pelosi about the use of waterboarding while 41 percent said that's unlikely. The belief and disbelief tracked closely with political party affiliation.

The poll of 1,000 likely voters taken over the weekend has a 3 percent margin of error. In it, 58 percent said they don't want any probes of how the Bush administration treated terrorism suspects.

Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., said that Pelosi either needs to prove her case or apologize.

"If indeed Nancy Pelosi has lied, which it seems to me that she has, then she either needs to resign or at the very least have a public and open apology to the CIA," Franks said.

Franks then accused Democrats, including Pelosi, of constantly undermining the Bush administration for political points.

"They held themselves completely unconstrained to the truth in all of those debates and it was I think damaging to our country and damaging to our national security, and it seems like now that they are in the supermajority, they've completely disinvited the truth from the entire discussion," Franks said.

"We could be facing nuclear jihad in the coming years, and being able to rely on what people say is of more and more importance to the American people," he added.

Franks acknowledged that for now it's more advantageous to Republicans for Pelosi to stay in office.

"Politically it might be better for us if she stays in because I think she's lost credibility with the American people, and it's easier for us to point out some of the foibles of the Democrat leadership with her in the leadership," he said

Obama takes a run at Notre Dame football

(AP)—Having put up with hecklers at Notre Dame, President Barack Obama got in a shot of his own at the school whose renowned football team has gone its longest stretch without a national championship.

After giving the commencement speech at Notre Dame, Obama spoke at an Indianapolis fundraiser Sunday night for the Democratic National Committee. He began his remarks by joking that he told The Rev. John Jenkins, the university president, that the controversy surrounding his campus appearance “paled in comparison to what to do about the football team.”

The Fighting Irish had records of 3-9 and 7-6 the past two seasons—the most losses at the school in a two-year period—and haven’t won a national championship since 1988.

“That’s an issue we may not resolve within my four years,” Obama said.

“Eight,” shouted someone from the audience.

“All right, well, maybe in eight we might get it done,” Obama said.

Obama’s appearance at Notre Dame capped weeks of protests by some Roman Catholics upset that he was invited to speak at commencement despite his support of abortion rights and embryonic stem-cell research.

Frankfurt School Reigns Supreme at Notre Dame

Sunday May 17, 2009 Norma McCorvey, the notorious "Roe" in the landmark Supreme Court case "Roe v Wade" has been arrested. The plaintiff in the case that made abortion legal in the United States later became adamantly pro-life and in 1995 began a crusade to overturn the law she helped create. This fact has largely gone unreported by the mass media for reasons known only to them. McCorvey was taken into custody today without a struggle after trespassing on the grounds of Notre Dame University to protest the pending visit of radical pro-abortion President Barack Obama.

On Saturday, well known pro-life advocate Father Norman Weslin and nineteen others were arrested. Eighteen more got cuffed on Friday, including, Presidential candidate Alan Keyes. None of the protesters were in the least violent or provocative. Many carried signs like: ‘God Weeps for the Babies,' or ‘Notre Dame Cancel Obama,' or ‘Notre Dame Spiritual Sellout!'

The mass media has attempted to pass this off as yet another example of marginalized right-wing hysteria, but a peek just a little deeper into this controversy suggests other things at work.

First of all it is a disgrace that Notre Dame should choose to arrest peaceful protesters simply because they were "trespassing." What was the real message? The message I got was that this Notre Dame administration was unwilling to brook any opposition, even stooping to arrest Norma McCorvey, the elderly Father Weslin and Alan Keyes.

But more to the point is the willingness of this school president to break with sacred Catholic tenets (whether you agree with them or not) to the point where his action may threaten the very viability of the school. As of May 13, the Catholic News Agency reports that Notre Dame Alumni have already promised to withhold $14 million in donations unless Jenkins is replaced by someone who "is committed to the authentic identity of Notre Dame, grounded in the teachings of the Catholic Church."

Why would someone charged with the responsibility of maintaining both the traditional Catholic heritage and the financial soundness of a storied university like Notre Dame do such a thing?

Father Jenkins received a Masters of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, California. If it is anything like its secular sister a few blocks down the street, then the teaching staff is likely saturated with Frankfurt School proponents. Indeed, on the "Our Faith" page of their website, a testimonial in the sidebar says:

"Hours of conversation, study, and prayer with my peers in ministry taught me that we want the Catholic community to lead the work of creating a just society," says Claire Noonan (M.Div. '00). The Program Organizer for Social Justice and Next Generation at Call to Action in Chicago, she creates educational programs and sustained action campaigns focusing on sweatshop labor.

Oh, brother, there's that word "Chicago" again. Now, in my mind "social justice" has always been a codeword for Marxism, or in this case, the ecclesiastical equivalent, "Liberation Theology." Of course many Jesuits have been unfortunately drawn into that false ministry. But where is any reference to Catholic, or even biblical teachings? The Jesuit School at Berkeley is a member of the Graduate Theological Union, which has many ties to the Frankfurt School. Jenkins also attended Oxford University, and Oxford has also been penetrated by the Frankfurt philosophy.

As some of you doubtless know, the Frankfurt School was founded by communists shortly after the Bolshevik coup in Russia, and is dedicated to destruction of the West by cultural corruption. Willi Munzenburg, one of the school's founders put it bluntly. The school's curriculum was designed to:

organise the intellectuals and use them to make Western civilisation stink. Only then, after they have corrupted all its values and made life impossible, can we impose the dictatorship of the proletariat.

David R. Carlin, author of "The Decline and Fall of the Catholic Church in America" writes:

In general, the leaders of the Church have never understood the historical significance of the abortion-rights movement (and this can be said of the gay-marriage movement as well). What the abortion-rights movement wants is not simply the right to kill millions of unborn babies; what it also wants is the utter destruction of Christianity. (Emphasis mine.)

The pro-abortion movement has from the beginning wrapped itself in the mantle of "women's rights." But the fact of the matter is that in the abortion issue the radical Left saw a rare opportunity to split our society right down the middle, with the unstated goal of obliterating the moral principles that in the final analysis are our only non-violent defense against the designs of the communists. And they have been wildly successful. I do not believe there is a more divisive issue on today's political landscape, and the left relentlessly rubs salt in the wound.

In his commencement address, Obama called for "open hearts, open minds, fair-minded words" in looking for "common ground." But who has really been closed-minded here? Since 1973, the American public has been treated to a hateful propaganda blizzard vilifying pro-life citizens as Nazis who deny women's "rights," the non-existent "right to privacy" manufactured out of whole cloth by activist judges, and ever more radical legislation grounded in these flawed rulings.

Promises of restraint in the abortion industry have been followed by ever more extreme practices, including partial birth abortion (which early proponents claimed would never occur), to the point where today we are treated to a President who even supports killing children born alive after a failed abortion.

Do you honestly expect Obama to moderate his views at all? So do not be misled by his conciliatory tone! This deceptive talk is the one thing in which he excels - or at least in which his teleprompter excels.

I came across an unusually revealing article, which quotes Australian communists on the Marxist view of abortion. It is noteworthy because you rarely find communists being so straightforward. And the fact that it quotes Australian communists is irrelevant. Communists have the same core beliefs everywhere. Here is a key quote from the article:

The fetus, according to a Marxist, becomes a person when he is judged as such by "someone of higher wisdom." The humanity of the fetus depends upon how the mother perceives the "social relationship" that exists between them. If the mother desires to keep the baby, then she "fantasizes" it into becoming a human being. But, if she does not want the pregnancy, "it is something else entirely." Her opinion of the fetus thereby denies it of personhood.

Totalitarian control over our lives is the logical endpoint of this kind of "situational morality," and some Vatican intellectuals have argued Obama is leading us there.

Whatever Jenkins' reason for inviting Obama, I have little doubt about Obama's true motivation. Barack Obama, as I have extensively documented elsewhere, is a hardcore, doctrinaire communist. Conservative Catholics, Christians and other Americans committed to the sanctity of human life, i.e. the pro-life crowd, are some of the most principled and dedicated opponents of Obama's radical designs. What better way to disrupt, demoralize and divide that formidable group, and indeed the entire country, than to strike at the heart of this cherished bedrock Catholic institution?

That the President of Notre Dame, in a disgustingly servile, supplicating manner singled out one of the most extreme pro-abortion politicians in America for an honorary degree, while ignoring his ecclesiastical peers, a large body of the Notre Dame community, and even countenancing the arrest of harmless protesters, is a huge insult to Catholics everywhere and indeed a disgrace to all Americans. I believe it was deliberate.

The cultural Marxists are rejoicing today.

May 18^th, 2009, Fairfax, VA—Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson today strongly condemned the House of Representatives for voting to kill a resolution that would have launched an ethics investigation into Congressman John Murtha and several of his fellow Congressmen for their role in earmarking billions of dollars for the clients of a lobbying group that is now under an FBI investigation.

"The House under Nancy Pelosi's leadership clearly believes that it will suffer politically not if it fails to root out corruption, but if it fails to adequately cover it up," said Wilson. "Congress has brought disgrace upon itself and shame upon the people it is supposed to represent."

According to the Representative Jeff Flake's resolution, the PMA Group, headed by Paul Magliocchetti, "has given $3.4 million in political donations to no less than 284 Members of Congress." Additionally, defense appropriations committee lawmakers and staff were routinely showered with food, drink, and gifts. Lawmakers and staff were annually invited to a posh Alpine Christmas affair. They were often treated to expensive restaurant outings.

According to the New York times, PMA Group clients gathered billions in earmarks over the years. Wilson believes that each and every earmark ever lobbied for by the PMA Groups must now be scrutinized. "No stone should be left unturned," Wilson said.

In an email preceding the vote, House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn warned House Democrats in an email that "If the Flake resolution is referred to the Ethics Committee, members can expect attack ads to be run against them alleging members to be 'under investigation by the House Ethics Committee.'"

Wilson promised to remind the American people often of its "outright betrayal of ethical and representative government in favor politics as usual in Washington."

The Flake Resolution failed when it was tabled by a 215-182 vote in Roll Call 243.

"The House needs to drop the pretense. If Murtha is innocent, then the committee will show it. But, if the mountain of evidence—that which is already on the public record—proves otherwise, then action needs to be taken," Wilson declared.

"Anyone who voted to table this resolution voted to conceal a strong appearance of corruption, and one has to wonder: do 215 members who voted to kill the investigation have something herself to hide? Would an investigation into this pay to play morass, earmarks and sole source contracts reveal their names?" Wilson added.

In a recent editorial, the New York Times calls for a full-blown investigation. "Mr. Murtha and two subcommittee colleagues, Peter Visclosky of Indiana and James Moran of Virginia, received more than $4 million in campaign contributions from contract hungry PMA Group clients, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. In two recent budgets alone, the three earmarked $137 million for PMA Group clients. It is time to follow the money — all of it."

Obama Legitimizes Killing of Unborn Babies in Speech at Notre Dame's Graduation

(CNSNews.com) - After receiving an honorary doctorate in law at the University of Notre Dame’s graduation ceremony yesterday, President Barack Obama delivered a speech to the school's graduating seniors that sought to legitimize his position in favor of the legal killing of unborn children.

Obama told the graduates of the nation’s most well-known Catholic university that abortion “has both moral and spiritual dimensions”--although he did not explain why he had made this conclusion—and made it quite clear that, even so, he has no intention of moving from his position that it ought to be legal for a pregnant mother to have a doctor kill her unborn child for literally any reason at any stage of pregnancy.

The president also did not take back his declaration made in 2007 to Planned Parenthood that he would sign the Freedom of Choice Act, a bill that would eliminate all the state and federal limitations on abortion that have been achieved by the pro-life movement in the 26 years since the Supreme Court legalized abortion on demand in its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Nor did Obama rescind his vow to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act that currently protects states that do not recognize same-sex marriages from being compelled by the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the Constitution to recognize same-sex marriages contracted in other states.

Nor did he reverse his executive order allowing federal tax dollars to be used for research that kills human embryos in order to extract their stem cells.

Nor did he reverse his order to allow U.S. foreign aid dollars to be used to perform and promote abortion in foreign countries.

But he did lecture the Notre Dame graduates that the “two camps are irreconcilable” on the question of whether unborn life ought to be protected in law or left vulnerable to abortion, making it clear that he falls on the pro-abortion side of this unbridgeable divide.

Much of his speech exalted the idea that for pro-lifers to work together with people who favor the legal killing of unborn children is a more civilized and noble cause than the cause of protecting innocent life itself.

“The gay activist and the evangelical pastor may both deplore the ravages of HIV/AIDS, but find themselves unable to bridge the cultural divide that might unite their efforts,” Obama said. “Those who speak out against stem cell research may be rooted in an admirable conviction about the sacredness of life, but so are the parents of a child with juvenile diabetes who are convinced that their son's or daughter's hardships can be relieved.”

“The question then,” said Obama, “is how do we work through these conflicts? Is it possible for us to join hands in common effort? As citizens of a vibrant and varied democracy, how do we engage in vigorous debate? How does each of us remain firm in our principles, and fight for what we consider right, without, as [Notre Dame President] Father John [Jenkins] said, demonizing those with just as strongly held convictions on the other side? And of course, nowhere do these questions come up more powerfully than on the issue of abortion.”

“That's when we begin to say, ‘Maybe we won't agree on abortion, but we can still agree that this heart-wrenching decision for any woman is not made casually, it has both moral and spiritual dimensions,” said Obama.

“So let us work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions, let's reduce unintended pregnancies,” said Obama. “Let's make adoption more available. Let's provide care and support for women who do carry their children to term. Let's honor the conscience of those who disagree with abortion, and draft a sensible conscience clause, and make sure that all of our health care policies are grounded not only in sound science, but also in clear ethics, as well as respect for the equality of women. Those are things we can do.”

“Now, understand, Class of 2009, I do not suggest that the debate surrounding abortion can or should go away. Because no matter how much we may want to fudge it--indeed, while we know that the views of most Americans on the subject are complex and even contradictory--the fact is that at some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcilable,” said Obama. “Each side will continue to make its case to the public with passion and conviction. But surely we can do so without reducing those with differing views to caricature. Open hearts. Open minds. Fair-minded words. It's a way of life that has always been the Notre Dame tradition.”

Obama's Faith-Based Adviser Urges Challenge to ‘Heteronormative' Fatherhood

A controversial member of President Barack Obama’s faith-based council said that part of the administration’s role in promoting responsible fatherhood should include moving beyond America’s “heteronormative view of fatherhood.”

Harry Knox, appointed last month to the 25-member President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, has drawn fire for inflammatory comments about the Catholic Church and Pope Benedict XVI.

Knox talked about fatherhood and other issues the council would work on in a May 11 PBS interview, which aired two days before a May 13 letter – signed by nearly two dozen prominent Catholics, including House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) – was sent to the White House asking Obama to remove Knox from the council.

The letter was also signed by L. Brent Bozell III, president of the Media Research Center, the parent organization of CNSNews.com.

“Responsible fatherhood offers us an immense opportunity to speak to a real need in the country,” said Knox, director of the faith and religion program at the Human Rights Campaign, a homosexual rights group, during the PBS interview broadcast on its Religion & Ethics Newsweekly show.

“It’ll be challenging to do that for instance in ways that are not dismissive of the tremendous gifts of single mothers; not to sort of hold a heteronormative view of fatherhood up as the only model,” said Knox.

The White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships is responsible for distributing federal money to religious non-profit and charitable organizations.

“For instance, 25 percent of gay male couples in the country are raising children – their own and other people’s,” Knox, a member of the United Church of Christ and the Interdenominational Conference of Liberation Congregations and Ministries, told PBS.

“So the challenge will be for all of us getting to know what fatherhood means for us, and how to talk about it in a way that is as inclusive as possible and empowering as possible,” he said.

He added that mentoring programs for homosexual fathers should be reviewed by the council.

“One of the things I am suggesting on the council is that they look at mentoring processes that gay dads have developed to help each other be good fathers around the country,” Knox said.

On March 17, two weeks before his appointment to the advisory council, Knox published a statement on the Human Rights Campaign Web site in reaction to the pope’s statement on condoms and AIDS in Africa, saying, “The Pope’s statement that condoms don’t help control the spread of HIV, but rather condoms increase infection rates, is hurting people in the name of Jesus.”

In response to a bishop’s instruction that a lesbian couple in Wyoming could not receive communion at the Catholic Mass, Knox, in an April 6, 2007 statement on the HRC’s Web site wrote: “In this holy Lenten season, it is immoral and insulting to Jesus to use the body and blood of Christ the reconciler as a weapon to silence free speech and demean the love of a committed, legally married couple.”

On April 6, 2009, in an interview with CNSNews.com, Knox stood by his comments from the previous month in the San Francisco-based Bay Area Reporter when he said the pope is a discredited leader.

“The Pope needs to start telling the truth about condom use,” Knox said. “We are eager to help him do that. Until he is willing to do that and able, he’s doing a great deal more harm than good – not just in Africa but around the world. It is endangering people’s lives.”

The day the letter from the 22 Catholics was released, Knox told Newsmax he was not anti-Catholic.

"I love the Catholic Church and love my Catholic sisters and brothers very much,” he said. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Roman Catholic Church and for all the good that it does. I do think that we have a real disagreement about the role of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, both in the role of the church and in the role of public service."

“If Harry Knox truly loved the Catholic Church, the first thing he’d do is formally and publicly apologize to the Holy Father for his anti-Catholic bigotry,” Bozell said.

Taking on the Taliban in pink boxer shorts, t-shirt and flip-flops is not regarded as conventional military uniform.

Especially when the shorts declare ‘I love New York’.

However when Zachary Boyd, 19, was woken up by a Taliban assault on his platoon he only had time to grab his weapon, helmet and body armour before springing into action.

Most of the time his appearance on the Afghanistan’s frontline would have gone unnoticed by the eyes of the world.

However, Boyd managed to pick the day when a photographer was on hand to capture him going into battle in the pink boxers, red t-shirt and flimsy footwear.

The image of the fight at Firebase Restrepo in the Korengal Valley of Kunar Province later ended up on the front page of The New York Times.

‘I knew he was a boxer guy. I knew that for sure. I did not know they were pink, and I didn’t know they said, ‘I love New York,’ father Tommy Boyd told his local Texas radio station WBAP.

‘After I saw the picture I just laughed for about five minutes.’

Boyd phoned his mother Sheree Boyd to warn her that he might be in the paper.

‘He said: “I hear the Times is what they put on the President’s desk”,’ she said.
‘Then he told us, “I may not have a job any more after the President has seen me out of uniform”.

‘It was typical. He has always been an interesting little character.’

Boyd, who graduated from Keller Central High School in 2007, decided to join the army because of the September 11 attacks.

He was promoted to the rank of Army Specialist last week.

With the nation’s top Democrat less than 12 hours away from delivering a controversial address to Notre Dame’s graduates, some protesters outside the Catholic university were wondering Saturday why President Obama’s Republican opposition hadn’t shown up from Washington.

Anti-abortion demonstrators are making their way to South Bend, Ind., by the busload this weekend to protest Obama’s support for abortion rights and embryonic stem cell research. They argue Notre Dame shouldn’t have invited Obama to speak or offered him an honorary degree.

Judy Zabick said she was “very upset because there’s not one politician here.”

“And what an opportunity missed for the Republicans to take advantage of the passion and the devotion that these people have,” Zabick said. “Where are our leaders, not only in our church, but in our nation?”

One Republican exception was 2008 presidential candidate Alan Keyes, who remained jailed Saturday following his second arrest the day before for trespassing on Notre Dame’s campus.

As a member of the Independent Party, Zabick, along with her husband, Bob, and son, Michael, were among roughly 50 protesters who congregated on four corners at Angela Boulevard and Notre Dame Avenue, just outside the university’s gates.

Bob Zabick said he was more concerned with the lack of Catholic bishops publicly condemning the university’s decision to host President Obama. As of Friday, at least 74 Catholic bishops nationwide have voiced their disapproval.

“It’s words. We need their physical presence to do something,” he said. “Where are our bishops? Where are our shepherds? They’re supposed to be leading the flock, and where are they? You don’t see anyone out here.”

Pastor Joseph Larson, of the Doers of the Word Baptist Church of Missouri, stood just feet away with an enlarged, graphic image of an aborted fetus next to a quarter for size comparison. He was angered that he risked arrest if he ventured onto campus with the tabletop-sized sign.

“They didn’t want that inside,” Larson said. “So we’re bringing it out to the streets because the truth has to be told. A nation that destroys its own children has no future. That’s got to be the most common sense in the world.”

Andrew Beachum, of Elkhart, Ind., learned the hard way last Friday when he joined anti-abortion activist Randall Terry, who runs stopobamanotredame.com, and carried plastic dolls covered in fake blood on the campus.

“The constitution of Notre Dame says they’re willing to dialogue and be a school of free speech, but instead they arrested us,” Beachum said. “We were just praying, we weren’t being violent or anything.”

Meanwhile, Ashley Baldridge, a graduate student of biology at Notre Dame, said she was appalled by the “gory images” held by protesters like Larson.

“The attention here should be on the graduates and I don’t really like the spectacle created here,” she said. “All of the protesters are not from the Notre Dame community and I don’t like that people are putting gory images all over town and right at the gateway of our campus. It makes me sick.”

News flash Ashley. The "gory images" depict the un-Godly, heinous act of slaughtering the unborn. Don't like the pictures? DO something to stop the murder besides whining about people who are against abortion and trying to stop it.

An Open Letter to the GOP

Dear Democrats in Drag in the GOP/RNC Leadership positions,

Please stop sending me letters begging me for money. I am no longer a member of the Republican Party.

For years I was a member of the GOP because it was the closest political machine that represented my views as a Conservative Libertarian but that was too hard to explain to the idiots the federally run public indoctrination camps spits out these days, aka the Public School System. By the way, the American Public School System is unconstitutional. Try to locate the constitutionality of the Department of Education and what they are doing within the Constitution and I’ll go along with it. I won’t hold my breath.

I grow weary, no, I am past that stage. I am ultimately sick and tired of getting letters with the opening lines asking me if I have given up on the GOP. That’s a dumb question and tugging on my heart strings doesn’t work. I have more integrity than that and I do not live by emotion - emotion does not drive me, my intellect does and these kinds of form letters insult me. I am not an emotionally driven Democrat. So, please stop.

However, I do have emotions and it breaks my heart when I see this Nation slip into that abyss of obscurity because cowards will not stand for what they believe in and go along to get along.

I came home from a war and for the first time I realized what the Vietnam Veterans experienced - a country lost and wallowing in the primordial ooze of a lost identity and a lost mission. The United States Constitution that I fought and bled for means nothing to you, apparently. If it did mean something to you, and it should because all of you swore the same Oath I did, you would be addressing each and every Bill in the confines, edicts and restrictions set forth in our Founding Document. Yet and alas, you do not. Why is that?

I hear all of you debate and argue and not one of you - NOT ONE - even dare to mention the United States Constitution. Well, perhaps one of you does and, oddly enough, that is Senator Byrd that mentions it and waves it around before the CSPAN cameras and then promptly votes against it. Lip service disgusts me.

Well, perhaps Ron Paul does also but he is the wrong guy for the right message. He just so happens to be wrong about some key Constitutional issues but that’s for another day. And, you don’t care anyway.

And about that ill-founded statement about me abandoning the Republican Party. What Republican Party? The one going by the wayside of the Whigg Party, the Know Nothing Party? When I hear alleged Republicans say we have to move into the bigger tent and move further to the left, I have to ask myself, who is the idiot that is saying all of this? Move further to the left when others are saying that the GOP has moved to the far right? When did the GOP move into the Anarchist’s Camp? Did you do that while we were fighting the Jihadi? Is that why I hear we have to move left because we are all Anarchists now? What did I miss while I was fighting to keep you all warm and fuzzy at night?

Perhaps you are all referring to those neocons. You know, those Democrats that moved into the GOP because they knew that running as a Conservative would guarantee a win and the Democrats, to this day, run “conservatives” against the “liberal” Republicans…and WIN. And you guys put a liberal Republican, ie John
McCain up against another seasoned liberal? To what end? How did that work out for you and the Nation?

Does it make you proud that now, at this moment, a known Jihadi sympathizer, a known Communist is now in the position of acting President of the United States? An unknown? A nobody? A liberal so far to the left that Stalin would be proud? And you want to move FURTHER to the left? Have you lost your minds? And you ask me if I have abandoned you? You ask me if I have given up? You ask me for donations so that you can win elections by moving further to the left? I was, in fact, born in the early morning hours but, it wasn’t yesterday morning.

I have watched time and time again as the RNC/GOP machine embrace, coddle, promote and support known liberal Republicans and have watched each one fail and lose elections or re-elections. I witnessed my Senator, John Cornyn, throw all of his weight behind that democrat in drag Arlen Specter. When I heard that, I fired off a letter telling Senator Cornyn that the last election was my last vote for him and now he is doing the same with yet another democrat in drag that is all of a sudden, like McCain, Graham and Cantor, talking about “conservatism” like they believe in it and live it. Please. I can spot a liar from 10 clicks. Cornyn is now supporting and throwing his weight behind Crist. Who has abandoned whom? You have got to be kidding me. Is Crist now going to defect to the Democrat Party like Arlen Specter did? He should.

What the RNC/GOP leadership ought to do but doesn’t have the moral fortitude to do, is purge the GOP of the democrats in drag and have their Party membership revoked, their membership cards sent through the shredder and have them take their neocon (old democrat) selves back to their first love, the Democrat Party.
At least the enemy can be identified once more. It is nearly impossible to win a battle when the enemy cannot be clearly defined.

When one takes a critical look at both main political parties, it is very hard to distinguish which one is more liberal than the other and it seems like each is trying to out-liberal the other.

I watched the buffoons of the GOP act the court jester over the Terri Schiavo debacle - unconstitutional and an international embarrassment.

I watch and behold grown men and women make fools of themselves in both parties acting like spoiled brats caring for one thing and one thing only - winning an election at all costs. With a complete disregard for the United States Constitution, both parties go after each other in a power struggle because one Party says they can do a better job than the other and neither is worth the powder to blow them all to hell. Neither Party argues or debates their policies with the Constitution in mind.

When I witness people like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid say in the public domain, "The will of the Congress will be done" or, "The will of the Congress has been heard" and no one challenges them on that, something is seriously wrong and I have to question the mental capacity of those that have sworn to protect and defend the United States Constitution. Last I knew, it was the will of We The People that WILL be done and WILL be heard.

What Side Are You On?

Questions have come up in many discussions on both the left and right side of the blogosphere about whether or not U.S. soldiers will fire upon U.S. citizens if the country collapses and the Fed's order the military to take control.

There are no simple or easy answers. Speculation abounds on both sides of the argument.

The U.S. military provides an oath sworn at the time of induction that all who join take. It states;

I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

The essential element of the oath is that it is an oath to protect the Constitution. It is not an oath to protect the federal government or follow orders of the president or anyone else in authority if their actions violate the Constitution.

What is interesting here are the implications. The oath taker swears to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. Unsaid, though implied, is that if the federal government and/or the president become enemies of the Constitution through their actions, the oath taker is compelled to defend against them.

If the federal government becomes your enemy, you can count on being classified as an enemy to them. Reference the recent DHS document making anybody that disagrees with the government or the president, an extremist, especially you pesky right wingers. For instance if, some speculate when, martial law is declared, there will likely be a very thin line that both citizen and soldier alike will have to decide whether or not they will cross. The citizen will have to decide if he wants to subject himself to the will of the military...or not.

The soldier will have to make the same choice...

So it bears the question, if the country collapses into anarchy and chaos, what are you as a citizen or a soldier or a police officer prepared to do?

I believe some would turn their weapons on citizens. They will just follow orders without thinking. It has been done in the past. Citizens will likely turn their own weapons on the miltary if that happens. There are 80 million gun owners in America by conservative estimates. That number is probably much higher. The bloodshed would be appalling.

The military is only as strong as the chain of command that is based upon clear moral authority. An un-Constitutional act would likely result in that moral clarity dissolving and the authority of leadership being put in question.
Some will state, correctly so, that many un-Constitutional acts have already taken place by our government. One has merely to read headlines. Of course it helps to know exactly what is actually written in the Constitution. Too many of our fellow countrymen don't have a clue, including elected officials who, one would assume, supposedly know the Constitution.
Don't count on it.
Educate yourself about the Constitution. Read it and comprehend what is written there. It could mean the difference between making an informed decision and one that is merely reactionary.

With the dissolving of moral clarity and authority, many in the military will question orders and missions. They may be faced with life or death decisions. These men and women are possessed with an above average dedication and loyalty to this nation. That alone will make some pause to consider orders to shoot American citizens, if it ever comes to that.

The oath they swore was to defend the Constitution and it's people. NOT to defend the government or elected officials if they make themselves an enemy of the Constitution and we the people.

The military will certainly take two actions if a worst case scenario ensues:

1. Protect strategic weapons and delivery systems from all incursions. There will be no questions asked, and no allegiances will be tolerated except to the Constitution.

2. The world and the enemies outside our borders will be put on notice that any attempt by them to interfere with our internal fight will be met with severe consequences, up to and including the use of nuclear weapons.

On the one hand it is encouraging to know that U.S. soldiers take their oath of service very seriously and that they would likely question orders to suppress or fire upon U.S. citizens.
On the other hand, the fact that an organization like Oath Keepers was seen as necessary is frightening to many.

We know that several thousand U.S troops have been actively training for urban warfare within our borders. Many see that as a sign of what may be in our future. Is it?

Whose version of the Constitution of the United States will you abide by?
Statist will tell you that the Constituion must be constantly re-interpreted to comply with ever evolving societal changes. Bravo Sierra.
The Constituion was written in plain english for the common man and does not need interpretation. Argue about it all you like, I could give a damn.

The oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same, was valid when it was given to me so many years ago. It is still. Count on it.

GOP, RNC to rebrand Democrats as 'Socialists'

A member of the Republican National Committee told me Tuesday that when the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the “Democrat Socialist Party.”

When I asked if such a resolution would force RNC Chairman Michael Steele to use that label when talking about Democrats in all his speeches and press releases, the RNC member replied: “Who cares?”

Which pretty much sums up the attitude some members of the RNC have toward their chairman these days.

Steele wrote a memo last month opposing the resolution. Steele said that while he believes Democrats “are indeed marching America toward European-style socialism,” he also said in a (rare) flash of insight that officially referring to them as the Democrat Socialist Party “will accomplish little than to give the media and our opponents the opportunity to mischaracterize Republicans.”

Two other resolutions — to urge Republican lawmakers to reject earmarks and to commend them for opposing “bailouts and reckless spending bills” — are also on the agenda, but language that would have denounced Sen. Arlen Specter, a Republican turned Democrat, and Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins for voting for President Obama’s stimulus package has been dropped.

Steele didn’t want the special session to be held at all. The RNC will hold its regular summer meeting in July, and all matters could have waited until then. But the special session is being viewed by some in the party as a “comeuppance” for Steele and an implied criticism of his performance and behavior in his first 100 days in office.

Democrats charged Tuesday that the CIA has released documents about congressional briefings on harsh interrogation techniques in order to deflect attention and blame away from itself.

“I think there is so much embarrassment in some quarters [of the CIA] that people are going to try to shift some of the responsibility to others — that’s what I think,” said Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who sat on the Senate Intelligence Committee and was briefed on interrogation techniques five times between 2006 and 2007.

FOX NEWS: WASHINGTON – One out of every four ballots requested by military personnel and other Americans living overseas for the 2008 election may have gone uncounted, according to findings being released at a Senate hearing Wednesday.

Sen. Charles Schumer, chairman of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, said the study, while providing only a snapshot of voting patterns, “is enough to show that the balloting process for service members is clearly in need of an overhaul.”

The committee, working with the Congressional Research Service, surveyed election offices in seven states with high numbers of military personnel: California, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington and West Virginia.

It said that of 441,000 absentee ballots requested by eligible voters living abroad — mainly active-duty and reserve troops — more than 98,000 were “lost” ballots that were mailed out but never received by election officials. Taking into account 13,500 ballots that were rejected for such reasons as a missing signature or failure to notarize, one-quarter of those requesting a ballot were disenfranchised.

The study found that an additional 11,000 ballots were returned as undeliverable.

Schumer’s office said that because a person living abroad must request the absentee ballot and show a clear intention to vote, voter negligence is not thought to be a major factor.

Rather, the New York Democrat said in a statement, there is a chronic problem of military voters being sent a ballot without sufficient time to complete it and send it back. He cited estimates that a ballot can take up to 13 days to reach an overseas voter.

Among the states surveyed, California had 30,000 “lost” votes out of 103,000 ballots mailed out. An additional 3,000 ballots were returned as undeliverable and 4,000 were rejected.

The hearing was to take up possible problems in the Federal Voting Assistance Program, a Pentagon program that handles the election process for military personnel and other overseas voters.

ND Response has received official permission to hold a prayerful and constructive demonstration on the South Quad of the University of Notre Dame between 11am and 4pm on the day of Commencement. The students of this coalition would like to extend an invitation to all those interested in joining us on campus on May 17th as we respectfully give witness to Notre Dame's Catholic identity and pro-life principles.

In defense of the unborn, we wish to express our deepest opposition to Reverend John I. Jenkins, C.S.C.’s invitation of President Barack Obama to be the University of Notre Dame’s principal commencement speaker and the recipient of an honorary degree. Our objection is not a matter of political partisanship, but of President Obama’s hostility to the Catholic Church’s teachings on the sanctity of human life at its earliest stages. Further, the University’s decision runs counter to the policy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops against honoring pro-choice politicians. We cannot sit by idly while the University honors someone who believes that an entire class of human beings is undeserving of the most basic of all legal rights, the right to live.

Additionally, Fr. Jenkins has put some of his students into a position of moral dilemma as to whether they should attend their own graduation. Many pro-life seniors, along with their families, now feel personally conflicted about participating in the commencement. The lack of concern for these devoted sons and daughters of Notre Dame, who love this University and the Catholic principles on which it was built, is shameful.

For Democrats pushing an investigation into potential criminal wrongdoing in the war on terrorism, the GOP now has a two-word response: Nancy Pelosi.

Republicans say new revelations about a CIA briefing Pelosi received in 2002 have given them their best shot yet at blocking a sprawling probe into Bush administration interrogation techniques by allowing them to insist that its targets would include the speaker of the House.

“If someone is going to schedule hearings, I believe that the first witness should be Nancy Pelosi,” Rep. Pete Hoekstra, the ranking member on the House intelligence committee, told POLITICO. “Clearly, she was involved in policy formulation.”

According to records released last week by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Pelosi and other congressional officials were told in 2002 that enhanced interrogation techniques had been used on terrorist suspect Abu Zubaydah. The report appeared to contradict Pelosi’s claims — made earlier and again after the report was released — that she had been told only that such techniques might be used in the future, not that they had already been used.

According to a 2005 Justice Department memo released this year by the Obama administration, Zubaydah had been waterboarded 83 times by the time Pelosi was briefed in 2002.

In light of the intelligence report, Republicans say that any probe into torture should be broadened to include what Pelosi knew and how much influence she had in shaping the Bush administration’s controversial policies.

The GOP’s goal, according to congressional Republicans, is to dissuade Democrats from pursuing an inquiry that could lead to the prosecution of Bush administration officials by making it clear to Democrats that Pelosi and other lawmakers would have to testify, too.

Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, said in an interview that if Pelosi failed to object to the techniques at the time, she was “an enabler” and “an accomplice” if any crimes were committed. If an investigation goes forward, King said, Pelosi should be forced to divulge what she knew.

In a statement Friday, Pelosi said she had been advised at the 2002 briefing about techniques the Bush administration was “considering using in the future” — and that she’d been assured they were legal. Pelosi also pointed to a letter from CIA Director Leon Panetta saying that the memo’s description of the briefings “may not be accurate.”

Still, Republicans believe they now have Pelosi caught in a jam: To satisfy her liberal base, she’s got to keep pressing for an investigation into potential crimes by the Bush administration. But if Republicans can score points with the “what did she know and when did she know it?” question, Pelosi also may have an interest in putting this issue aside.

“I’ll be very curious to see how she deals with it,” said a senior House GOP aide. “Does she stop talking about it and piss off her left?”

Nadeam Elshami, a spokesman for the speaker, said Saturday that Republicans are “trying to politicize intelligence with irresponsible actions” and that Pelosi still supports an inquiry into the use of the interrogation techniques. The House and Senate intelligence committees have launched internal reviews, but it’s unclear whether they will expand beyond classified inquiries.

In what may be the first assessment of its kind, a private company that offers a range of privacy products for computers and other technology is ranking the United States No. 6 in the world for having the most aggressive procedures for monitoring residents electronically.

The report, called The Electronic Police State, assesses the status of governmental surveillance in 52 nations around the globe for 2008.

The document was released Cryptohippie, Inc., which was set up in 2007 through the acquisition of several little-known but highly regarded providers of privacy technologies.

Not surprisingly, China and North Korea ranked No. 1 and No. 2, with Belarus and Russia following up. But the United Kingdom ranked fifth followed by the United States.

"Most of us are aware that our governments monitor nearly every form of electronic communication. We are also aware of private companies doing the same. This strikes most of us as slightly troubling, but very few of us say or do much about it. There are two primary reasons for this," the report said.

"We really don't see how it is going to hurt us. Mass surveillance is certainly a new, odd, and perhaps an ominous thing, but we just don't see a complete picture or a smoking gun," the report continued. Also, "We are constantly surrounded with messages that say, 'Only crazy people complain about the government.'"

The report mapped the world, showing the most advanced electronic police states in red, orange reflecting strongly developing electronic police states and yellow showing nations that are developing, but lagging:

Company spokesman Paul Rosenberg told WND the biggest obstacle, however, is that the image of a "police state" dredges up visions of Nazi Germany's thugs breaking down doors in the middle of the night and hauling people off to blacked-out trains or Stalin's USSR rounding up "offenders" for imprisonment.

"That's how things worked during your grandfather's war – that is not how things work now," the report said.

"An electronic police state is quiet, even unseen. All of its legal actions are supported by abundant evidence. It looks pristine," the report said.

To create the rankings, which also included Singapore, Israel, France and Germany in the top 10, his organization searched its worldwide sources for information, checked against a number of other published reports, and assigned a value of 1 to 5 to 17 different factors:

Daily documents: How much is required day-to-day for residents to present state-issued identity documents or registration.
Border issues: What is demanded for a border entry.
Financial tracking: The state's ability to search and record financial transactions.
Gag orders: The penalties for revealing to someone else the state is searching their records.
Anti-crypto laws: Bans on cryptography.
Constitutional protections: Either a lack of protections or someone overriding them.
Data storage: The state's ability to record and keep what it uncovers.
Data search: The processes to search through data.
ISP data retention: The demand for ISPs to save customers' records.
Telephone data retention: States' requirements for communications companies to record and save records.
Cell phone records: The saving and using of cell phone users' records.
Medical records: Demands from states that medical records retain information.
Enforcement: The state's ability to use force (SWAT teams) to seize someone.
Habeus corpus: Either an absence of such rights or someone overriding them.
Police-Intel barrier: the absence of a barrier between police and intelligence organizations.
Covert hacking: State operatives meddling in data on private computers covertly.
Loose warrants: Warrants that are being issued without careful review of police claims by a truly independent judge.

The listings of China, North Korea, Belarus and Russia, all known for their repression of freedom, weren't surprising. Nor was the listing of the United Kingdom with its recent programs to copy and store virtually every telephone call, e-mail and text message within its borders.

But Rosenberg said there's more going on in the United States than many believe want to believe.

The nation's "basic system of gathering evidence and sorting it later is really dangerous," he said. "It's permanent. It's not going to go away."

It goes so far that a person's alcohol consumption actually could be tracked by government agents, if they chose, through credit card documentation, he told WND.

"In an Electronic Police State, every surveillance camera recording, every e-mail you send, every Internet site you surf, every post you make, every check you write, every credit card swipe, every cell phone ping… are all criminal evidence, and they are held in searchable databases, for a long, long time," the report said.

"Whoever holds this evidence can make you look very, very bad whenever they care enough to do so. You can be prosecuted whenever they feel like it – the evidence is already in their database," the report continued.

"Perhaps you trust that your ruler will only use his evidence archives to hurt bad people. Will you also trust his successor? Do you also trust all of his subordinates, every government worker and every policeman?

"If some leader behaves badly, will you really stand up to oppose him or her? Would you still do it if he had all the e-mails you sent when you were depressed? Or if she has records of every porn site you've ever surfed?

Or if he knows every phone call you've ever made? Or if she knows everyone you've ever sent money to?" the report asks.

"This system hasn't yet reached its full shape, but all of the basics are in place and it is not far from complete in some places," the report said.

Rosenberg told WND the organization also sought input on the status of electronic surveillance around the world from organizations including the the Electronic Privacy Information Center, Reporters Without Borders, Freedom House, the Ludwig von Mises Institute and The Heritage Foundation.

A lot of the difference, the change if you will, between Obama and Bush has much to do with the word humility.

George Bush is and was a humble man. Obama thinks the world counts on him and him alone to lead us. Bush went to church and prayed often. Obama puts out press releases about his supposed piety. The left sold a great bill of goods to the American people claiming that Bush, et al. were arrogant while insisting that Obama was a “man of the people.”

The 65th Anniversary of D-Day is fast approaching. Barack Obama will attend the events on June 6th as George Bush did in 2004 for the sixtieth memorial service. Here is the rub, as of now Obama’s State Department has asked (read demanded) the French government not allow tour guide services to operate that day. It is a big day for Normandy tourism. Yet, the king will not allow those not connected with government to enjoy the day. Obama is very important you know. This is an unprecedented request. I hope the French come to their senses and deny it.

Compare that with 2004. Security was tight as President Bush and other world leaders were in attendance, but the event was still open to all. A friend relayed the story of waiting in line to use a port-a-potty (a French port-a-potty no doubt, yuck, believe me.) She looks to her left and who he is in the next line waiting patiently? President Bush. Sure he had Secret Service nearby, but he waited like everyone else.

Contrast that with Team Obama not even allowing regular people near Colleville-Sur-Mer that day. A shame indeed. Especially as the last of our WW II vets are expiring.

As the Bamsters unemployment rate pushes 10% (double the Bush average) and his 3.5 trillion dollar budget breaks the USA (the press of course focuses on his 17 billion in “savings.” Way to go 4th Estate.), Obama has more to worry about then denying people the right to attend a memorial service on June 6th.

It’s as if Obama has to let it be known that he is more important than honoring the events and the 9,387 mostly young Americans who died invading Normandy 65 years ago. Will Obama apologize for American actions during WW II at the event?

I think the following quote from Obama himself sums it all up: “a light will shine down from somewhere…. You will experience an epiphany. And you will say to yourself, ‘I have to vote for Barack.’” Watch for yourself:

The guy can’t even bring himself to say “shine down from heaven.” Do you really expect him to line up to use the can with the commoners at a Normandy celebration? Americans may start to miss the guy with the humility.

Universal Healthcare, unchecked unions, government run banks, government run autos, cap and trade, turning the 20 million undocumented Democrats into voters: That isn’t America and it surely isn’t what those young boys died at Normandy for.

We elected a fairy tale. We can start the road back to reality in 2010 with the mid-term elections.

The unfolding spectacle of which leftist cipher should be appointed by Obama to replace departing leftist cipher, David Souter, on the Supreme Court underscores just how purely ideological justice in America has become. At first blush, conservatives might have taken some hope from Obama's promise to look for "those on the outside" to be on the court: there is no more underrepresented group in government or politics than conservatives, and there is no group more subject to the unfair application of the law than conservatives.

The left, of course, does not care at all about the qualifications of any nominee. Robert Bork was profoundly qualified and yet utterly unacceptable. The left, also, does not really care about demographic representation: ask Clarence Thomas, Miguel Estrada, Janice Rogers Brown, or Priscilla Owen. The left cares only about having enough Lords in our American House of Lords so that the Constitution can be bent into any purpose that suits the agenda of the left.

The ugly fact is that in every crevice of public life in which we expect to find an unbiased, objective, and dispassionate guardian of individual fairness, we find instead a blindered, bigoted, and boorish hack whose only real interest is in advancing "the cause." Witness the nauseating spectacle of parrots and hand-puppets in the mainstream media slavishly advancing the Obaman cult of personality. Witness the thuggish intrusion of political correctness into the pleasant diversion of beauty contests. Witness the kindly mask of public librarians, whose mission was once to liberate minds through the vistas of books, and who have now descended into champions of the tunnel vision of the left.

Public education has become a form of thought control and textbooks have deleted from famous literature the very language which made the literature great, replacing forceful words with euphemisms, historical and fictional characters with proscribed dogmas of what the left believes that real life should be, and calculated excisions of vital knowledge as thorough as anything that Stalin's toadies could have done in the black dungeon of totalitarianism.

We are all marked, almost as brutally as the Nazis marked Jews, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, and homosexuals. "Let me see your skin color, and I can tell if you are just. Let me know your sex, and I can tell you if you are kind. Tell me where how you seek God, and I will tell you if you are a bigot -- and tell me nothing about you as ‘you,' for you are a sociological construct."

We are judged in courts of law or our Fourth Estate or in every public instrument of education and enlightenment according to how slavishly we mimic the party line. We look at a land, once basically free and noble and fair, and we see instead thousands of minions scurrying about, seeking enemies of the party to torment. (Alas, the Obama policy on torture is that only those who politically oppose him may be terrorized and threatened without due process or mercy.)

We are referred in the various contests of ordinary life by men and women who have no more interest in the standard rules of fair play than the Nazis had in universal science. They wait patiently. One last old professor (who believed in academic freedom and such nonsense) will retire soon: We will put a cipher in his place. One hopelessly objective journalist will die: We will find a jihadist to fill his shoes. And another jurist enamored with individual justice leaves the bench: We will slip our Stalinist into his seat.

It is not that "the cause" is always bad: Many ordinary people can be persuaded to believe in good ideas and in bad ideas, provided that a monolithic vision is not imposed and that the lessons of experience can be referenced when "the cause" fails. It is rather that "the cause" is preordained true and, like their colleagues, the Nazis and the Marxists, any apparent failure is simply proof that enemies of the cause must be smothered more thoroughly.

Life is not politics. Life is faith. Life is family. Life is love. Life is a leisurely but serious stroll toward truth. Life is the delightful enjoyment of our differences and disagreements. Life is a vocation which is not drenched in partisanship. Politics, justice, and formal education should transitory, limited, and simple processes which do not interfere with the much more important business of life. But what should be is not: the left, the Inquisition of our lifetime, demands we all be orthodox and that heresy be crushed. There are no barriers of gentle mediation. There are no guardians of good gamesmanship. There are only agents of the Inquisition -- and the rest of us.

Suckers United For Change

Now that we’re more than 100 days into the Obama presidency, the handwriting is on the wall regarding our new leader’s game plan for America. Spend other people’s money like a drunken sailor. Let every enemy on the planet know there’s a wimp in the White House. Let every ally know the wimp in the White House will do nothing to help them when push comes to shove. Let the 50 states know there’s a power coup in play that strips them of constitutionally guaranteed liberties. Let every company know that neither they nor their non-union employees are safe from Chicago-Way thugs and their mouthpieces in the media. Let the 300 million American citizens know that the rule of law, applied equally to all, is about to be replaced by special favoritism in the form of “empathy.”

All in all, one would need to be a numbskull not to see banana republic written all over the current administration and its intent.

If asked for a word to describe an Obama voter, there is only one that any sentient person could offer: SUCKER.

These are folks who buy a used car from a slick-suited, smooth-talking, salesman of the decade who laughs every step of the way to the bank. These are folks who agree to 25 medical tests to find out they have a planter’s wart. These are folks who call immediately to buy the $19.95 super deal on an under-bed storage box they could buy any old day at Wal-Mart for a buck. These are the folks who think day old bread will make you sick.

They’re the kind of voters that every crooked politician has drooling dreams about every night of the year.

So, the next time that college kid or one of his professors beams that we- were-united-for-change malarkey at you, laugh in his face. The next time that brilliant-beyond-brilliant Gen X or Y business executive gloats on his liberal-white-guilt vote, just shake your head and send him a sympathy card. The next time that giddy woman with an Obama crush fawns over The One, roll your eyes and stay clear; she has a defect you don’t want in a future mate.

Has ever a bigger lot of fools been assembled on planet earth?
Could any of these folks work his way out of a wet paper bag?

Now, the silly thing in all this is that anyone with a single grain of common sense saw right through the man with the postage-stamp sized resume the first day he announced his bid for the presidency. And as exit polling demonstrated beyond any doubt, Obama voters were so swept-off-their-feet they didn’t even know the basic facts about the candidates last year. They voted with their feelings, their fancies, and their fools’ gold blinders.

Were they just old fashioned ninnies? Or were they actually brainwashed? Now, this is a very good question.
Brainwashing and the Obama Cult

Brainwashing has a pretty sordid history and has been a stock in trade of totalitarian regimes for a century. Here is a good description from How Stuff Works:

In psychology, the study of brainwashing, often referred to as thought reform, falls into the sphere of “social influence.” (snip) For instance, the compliance method aims to produce a change in a person’s behavior and is not concerned with his attitudes or beliefs. It’s the “Just do it” approach.

Persuasion, on the other hand, aims for a change in attitude, or “Do it because it’ll make you feel good/happy/healthy/successful.” The education method (which is called the “propaganda method” when you don’t believe in what’s being taught) goes for the social-influence gold, trying to affect a change in the person’s beliefs, along the lines of “Do it because you know it’s the right thing to do.” Brainwashing is a severe form of social influence that combines all of these approaches to cause changes in someone’s way of thinking without that person’s consent and often against his will.

We tend to think, as Americans, that any form of brainwashing among a free people, not under the threat of physical harm, would be impossible to employ with success.

However, during this election season, we saw a generalized favoritism for the Obama campaign among influential media people, on university campuses and even in K-12 education. We saw a prolific hagiography campaign that plastered billboards and sides of buildings in major cities. We saw manufactured “news” that ogled over crowds for Obama, but failed to mention the free rock concerts that immediately preceded Obama’s best-attended speeches. We saw Hollywood celebrities in full-thrall mode for The One. We saw religious imagery hijacked for ephemeral “change,” which was never defined, yet had mesmerizing effects.

This was a classic case of the brainwashing techniques of persuasion and education models, as described above.

So, who were indeed the biggest suckers for Obama’s ubiquitous kumbayah rhetoric? Hands-down the sucker prize goes to those most prone to groupthink brainwashing techniques of persuasion: the young.

Barack Obama carried the 18-29 year olds by a whopping 66% majority. According to Pew’s analysis, this vote chunk was perhaps the biggest deciding factor in 2008. Obama also garnered 52% of the 30-44 age group. These were the only age groups that voted in majorities for Barack Obama.

This makes perfect sense, when one acknowledges that universities and public education institutions have been leftist indoctrination centers for the past 30 years. The vast majority of American Universities subject entering freshmen to Sensitivity Training seminars as part of orientation.

In 2000, Reason published an in-depth article on university brainwashing seminars, euphemistically called “sensitivity training.” The author, Alan Charles Kors, provides an in-depth look into the Orwellian programs offered at nearly every American university. It is a frightening overview, entitled “Thought Reform 101,” which notes:

Tony Tillman, in charge of a mandatory “Social Issues” orientation at Dartmouth, explained in the Journal that students needed to address “the various forms of `isms’: sexism, racism, classism,” all of which were interrelated. Oberlin “educated” its freshmen about “differences in race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and culture,” with separate orientations for blacks, Hispanics, gays and lesbians, and Americans of Asian descent. Columbia University sought to give its incoming students the chance “to reevaluate [and] learn things,” so that they could rid themselves of “their own social and personal beliefs that foster inequality.” Katherine Balmer, assistant dean for freshmen at Columbia, explained to the Times that “you can’t bring all these people together…without some sort of training.”

American universities are unashamedly using brainwashing techniques, and have finally produced a generation willing to vote for an “acceptable” cult leader for president.

If the words, “I’ve been had,” are not at this juncture forming in the mind of nearly every Obama voter, I would give terrific odds that he has been brainwashed and needs to reclaim his common sense before the clock strikes 12 on the United States of America.

We live in a dangerous world, where no quarter will be given those whose brains have been turned to mush. If you were an Obama Cult follower, the time to wake up and smell the coffee is right this very minute.

Obama Sounds Death Knell For Nuclear Power

Under the guise of cutting wasteful spending, President Obama is terminating support for the Yucca Mountain spent nuclear fuel repository in Nevada. While not unexpected, this development means that there will be no place to store nuclear waste, probably for decades, other than at temporary storage locations at each of the nation's nuclear power plants.

This termination decision was one among several contained in a document titled "Terminations, Reductions, and Savings" which were announced today by the White House to cut $17 Billion from the FY2010 budget.

It seems disingenuous to suggest that canceling the Yucca Mountain project is going to help taxpayers, since the project is funded not by the taxpayer, but by the Nuclear Waste Fund. The Fund has about $30 Billion which is derived from an assessment on nuclear utilities based upon the amount of electricity generated. The cost is passed on to consumers.

President Ford and especially President Carter, effectively killed off the reprocessing option for spent nuclear fuel due to nuclear proliferation concerns, and Obama has now killed off the storage option for the foreseeable future.

This action will likely forestall the construction of new nuclear power plants which incorporate advanced safety and reliability features. These promising designs would add additional electric generating capacity without the huge carbon footprint of coal fired plants, which the Obama administration also opposes.

World-wide, other nations are turning to nuclear power to meet their obligations under the Kyoto Protocol for greenhouse gas emissions since sustainable technologies cannot bridge the gap between supply and demand.

The accompanying justification statement for the termination reads:

The President has acknowledged that nuclear power is -- and likely will remain -- an important source of electricity for many years to come and that how the Nation deals with the dangerous byproduct of nuclear reactors is a critical question that has yet to be resolved.

The President, however, has made clear that the Nation needs a better solution than the proposed Yucca Mountain repository. Such a solution must be based on sound science and capable of securing broad support, including support from those who live in areas that might be affected by the solution. Accordingly, Secretary of Energy Chu has announced that he will stand up an expert, Blue Ribbon Commission to evaluate options and make recommendations to the Administration for developing a new plan for the back end of the fuel cycle.

This reliance on getting the NIMBY crowd to support whatever solution Chu's panel decides means there will be no solution.

The Yucca Mountain project faced years of delay due to efforts of Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) and others to block it. When the Democrats took control of the Senate in 2008 and Reid became Majority Leader, the funding from Congress was curtailed and the program was in serious trouble.

Other countries including France, Japan and the United Kingdom, reprocess the spent fuel since it contains useful quantities of fissionable plutonium and uranium which can be made into additional nuclear fuel while removing quantities of plutonium which would otherwise be place in a burial site.

The Yucca Mountain decision is another example by this Administration where energy policy is driven by the liberal left rather than a realistic assessment of our energy options.

And, in denying this nation the benefits of clean, reliable nuclear power, Obama has eliminated the one energy option which has successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions on a large scale basis. Instead, we embark upon a hopeful, sustainable energy future using green technologies which are uneconomical and in many cases, unproven.

Although Gov. Brad Henry vetoed similar legislation 10 days earlier, House members Monday again approved a resolution claiming Oklahoma’s sovereignty.

Unlike House Joint Resolution 1003, House Concurrent Resolution 1028 does not need the governor’s approval.

The House passed the measure 73-22. It now goes to the Senate.

“We’re going to get it done one way or the other,” said the resolutions’ author, Rep. Charles Key, R-Oklahoma City.

“I think our governor is out of step.”

House Democrats objected, saying the issue already had been taken up and had been vetoed, but House Speaker Pro Tempore Kris Steele, R-Shawnee, ruled the veto is not final action.

Key said he expects HCR 1028 will pass in the Senate. HJR 1003 earlier passed the House 83-18 and won approval in the Senate 29-18.

Henry vetoed HJR 1003 because he said it suggested, among other things, that Oklahoma should return federal tax dollars.

Key said HCR 1028, which, if passed, would be sent to Democratic President Barack Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress, would not jeopardize federal funds but would tell Congress to “get back into their proper constitutional role.” The resolution states the federal government should “cease and desist” mandates that are beyond the scope of its powers.

Key said many federal laws violate the 10th Amendment, which says powers not delegated to the U.S. government “are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.” The Constitution lists about 20 duties required of the U.S. government, he said.

Congress should not be providing bailouts to financial institutions and automakers, he said.

“We give all this money to all these different entities, including automakers, and now they’re talking about, ‘Well maybe it’s better to let them go bankrupt,’” Key said. “Well, maybe we should have let them go bankrupt before we gave them the money.”

It’s not about Trade, it’s about Control

If you’re lucky, you have never heard of the “International Trade in Arms Regulation” treaty, or ITAR. Administered by the State Department through something called the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), this treaty is supposed to keep track of “defense” exports. Unfortunately, what you don’t know is about to hurt you.

Unintended Consequences

DDTC’s ITAR process hummed along out of the public view for years, focusing on the major international trade in firearms and military equipment until President Bush II moved to make the directorate 75 percent self-funding. In one fell stroke, he gave the agency the power to set its own budget, and levy its own taxes.
The results have been predictable. New rules published on Sept. 28, 2008 explosively increased fees.

Furthermore, DDTC has expanded its tax base to include all “arms” trade in the United States. Civilian firms with no military or export connection whatever are getting ominous letters from their wholesalers (Brownells sent a letter to all its vendors) asking if they are “in compliance” with the mysterious ITAR.

Subsection I(a) of the ITAR includes all firearms, barrels, “military” scopes, and all “components, parts, accessories and attachments” for any listed item. Subsection III includes manufacturers of ammunition, bullets, and technical data for the production of the above. If you cast bullets at home and sell them to your neighbors, you need to file with the DDTC. However, your Dillon press is exempt.

Flipping through the pages of Front Sight, “cartridge cases. . .bullets,” “firearms,” and “accessories and attachments” to firearms takes in pretty much our entire advertising base. We checked, and the magazine extensions USPSA competitors use have been ruled a “defense article” and all manufacturers of same must register with DDTC. The C-More optical sight? Tubes for a 170mm magazine? Moon clips for a revolver?

As best we can tell, every advertiser in this magazine other than Dillon and a few soft goods firms must register and be tracked as a “manufacturer” or “broker of defense articles” under DDTC’s purview.

If you don’t think that affects your ability to exercise your second amendment rights (albeit indirectly), or to enjoy shooting, take a minute and think about it. ITAR calls for government registration of all arms manufacturing. Not only will the government know exactly who makes how much of what, should the government decide NOT to issue a registration permit to any of those people, they’re out of business, immediately.

Basic registration has climbed from a few hundred dollars for a multi-year registration four years ago to $2,250 per year. Fail to pay this, and you risk federal prosecution. Should you actually export, the fees climb dramatically.

“For that money you get absolutely nothing,” says Jason Wong of the Firearms Law Group. (Wong advises clients including Sig Sauer, U.S. Ordnance, and Gemtech on compliance with federal firearms laws and export controls, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).) “I don’t mind paying my taxes, because that goes to pay for schools and roads and stuff, but this is something else.” While we know of a few accessory makers (of grips) that have been given a pass on registration, according to Wong, they’re the exception.

“It’s not just us,” said a representative from an accessory catalog. “I went to a Commerce Department training session and State Department reps came on one day. They said they’re targeting every company in every industry, so that they will know everyone involved before it’s all over.”

Airplane components, computer chips, optics for anything from night vision to missiles, thanks to the “accessories” clause, DDTC’s reach is astoundingly broad.

“Every industry group has this same complaint,” said our catalog representative. “The only way we can know if something is covered is to get a (State Department) ruling on it.”

Until recently, the whole ITAR process operated in a sort of “don’t ask, don’t tell” manner. If you built non-military parts and didn’t export, nobody at “State” really cared. Looking at it from a bureaucratic point of view, registering the little fish cost them time and money, and for what? Now that DDTC relies on registration to fund itself, that situation has changed.

“Now nobody says anything because they’re afraid. They know if they stand up, it’ll cost them $2,250 a year,” said an accessories maker that chose to remain anonymous. Some not-so-friendly competitors notified DDTC that his firm was making parts without a permit, and the hammer fell.

2008’s Year-End Surprise

Under its new rules, DDTC collects its registration fees at the end of the year, using a sliding scale depending on how many export licenses you requested. If you didn’t get the memo (”it was on the website. . .”), that means you pay for each of last year’s licenses when you renew your ITAR registration. Licenses that were almost free now cost $250 each.

I spoke with Dave Skinner at STI about their experience with the DDTC’s escalating fees. Almost half their business is with overseas clients.

“In three years (the changes) took us from $750 per year, to $1,750, to $18,500 per year in export costs.”
Pauletta Skinner handles most of STI’s export operation. She renewed STI’s registration early, fearing another doubling in fee prices akin to 2006-2007. Instead, the 2008 fee rose by one thousand percent - 10 times the previous year’s fee. “I couldn’t believe it,” she says. “I called them back because I thought it was a typo.”

Apparently DDTC put the change on their website, but didn’t notify registrants directly. When the bill came, STI was caught short. With no way to back up and pass the costs on to the customer, STI faced an ugly choice: Write a check for an extra $16,000, or cease operations immediately.
“We’re still reeling at the increase in costs,” says Dave Skinner.

Now put yourself in the shoes of Brownells, parts resource for gunsmiths worldwide. Brownells has a staff of five to deal with permitting issues for their international shipments. Huge swaths of their 36,000-item catalog are controlled by ITAR.

“We would have been happy with only that kind of a jump,” said David Dean when I asked about STI’s $16,000 surprise. “We do hundreds and hundreds of licenses, but I can’t give any details about the proposed fee since this issue is still being negotiated.”

Each foreign order over $99 for controlled items requires an export license from DDTC. For a company whose international business is likely in the millions, that’s a lot of permits. Brownells is still running under what was a two-year registration. They paid the new base fee to keep their registration alive, but that huge per-permit fee hangs like an axe over their business model. As Dean explained, even under the new rules, there are several possible ways to calculate fees. There is a “3 percent of value” option, but according to Sandy Strayer at SV, even the top hands on the DDTC response team weren’t sure how to calculate it.

Hence the protracted negotiations. If Brownells is lucky, they’ll “only” have to pay 3 percent of their export gross to the State Department.

While the registration end of this is problematic, that’s just the beginning.

Dom DeLuise, Dies at 75

Dom DeLuise, the jovial comic who enlivened such madcap films as Cannonball Run, Blazing Saddles, and Spaceballs, has died. He was 75.

Often working with Burt Reynolds or Mel Brooks, the bearded, roly-poly actor was known for a sharp, distinctive, almost howling laugh that fills the outtakes reel of Cannonball Run — a testament to the joyous time he had with Reynolds.

"I was thinking about this the other day," Reynolds said in a statement released to TVGuide.com. "As you get older, and start to lose people you love, you think about it more, and I was dreading this moment. DeLuise's death was confirmed Tuesday by a representative for his son, David DeLuise. No details were immediately available.

He hosted Candid Camera from 1991-92, and starred in two incarnations of The Dom DeLuise Show in 1968 and 1987. He shared his love of food, especially Italian cooking, through his show Cooking with Dom DeLuise and by authoring several cookbooks.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1933, he broke out as a performer on Dean Martin's show, playing a disastrous magician named Dominick the Great. His on-screen partnership with Reynolds included The Cannonball Run and The Cannonball Run II, Smokey and the Bandit II, The End, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and All Dogs Go to Heaven.

DeLuise invoked everything from fussy mannerisms to broad ethnic caricatures to get laughs, but seemed especially happy to make fun of himself, as he did as Pizza the Hutt in Brooks' 1987 film Spaceballs. Other DeLuise collaborations included The Twelve Chairs, Blazing Saddles, Silent Movie, History of the World, Part I, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Married to actress Carol Arthur, he was the patriarch of a show business family that also included his sons Peter, Michael, and David DeLuise. Peter DeLuise is best known for co-starring with Johnny Depp on 21 Jump Street, which also featured Michael DeLuise. The two brothers also appeared together on SeaQuest DSV.

DHS Sets Guidelines For Possible Swine Flu Quarantines

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has sent a memo to some health care providers noting procedures to be followed if the swine flu outbreak eventually makes quarantines necessary.

DHS Assistant Secretary Bridger McGaw circulated the swine flu memo, which was obtained by CBSNews.com, on Monday night. It says: "The Department of Justice has established legal federal authorities pertaining to the implementation of a quarantine and enforcement. Under approval from HHS, the Surgeon General has the authority to issue quarantines."

McGaw appears to have been referring to the section of federal law that allows the Surgeon General to detain and quarantine Americans "reasonably believed to be infected" with a communicable disease. A Centers for Disease Control official said on Tuesday that swine flu deaths in the U.S. are likely.

Federal quarantine authority is limited to diseases listed in presidential executive orders; President Bush added "novel" forms of influenza with the potential to create pandemics in Executive Order 13375. Anyone violating a quarantine order can be punished by a $250,000 fine and a one-year prison term.

A Homeland Security spokesman on Tuesday did not have an immediate response to followup questions about the memo, which said "DHS is consulting closely with the CDC to determine appropriate public health measures."

The memo from McGaw, who is DHS' acting assistant secretary for the private sector, also said: "U.S. Customs and Coast Guard Officers assist in the enforcement of quarantine orders. Other DOJ law enforcement agencies including the U.S. Marshals, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives may also enforce quarantines. Military personnel are not authorized to engage in enforcement."

Quarantines are hardly new: their history stretches at least as far back as the Bible, which describes a seven-day period of isolation that priests must impose when an infection is apparent. The word literally means a period of 40 days, which cities along the Mediterranean shipping routes imposed during the plague of the 15th century, a legal authority reflected in English law and echoed in U.S. law.

Congress enacted the first federal quarantine law in 1796, which handed federal officials the authority to assist states in combating the yellow fever epidemic. In response to the 1918 influenza epidemic, states levied quarantines and imposed mask laws – with the District of Columbia restricting residents to their homes and San Francisco adopting the slogan "Wear a Mask and Save Your Life! A Mask is 99% Proof Against Influenza." Public health authorities quarantined the entire campus of Syracuse University for two-and-a-half weeks in October of that year.

Until recently, the last involuntary quarantine in the United States was in 1963. Then, in 2007, Andrew Speaker, an Atlanta lawyer, was quarantined inside a hospital in Denver on suspicion of having extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis. It turned out that the CDC was incorrect and Speaker had a milder form of the disease.

The CDC's error is one example of how quarantines can raise civil liberties issues. If a suspected swine flu patient is confined to a hospital isolation ward for a week or two, who pays for the bills? What if private businesses find their buildings requisitioned in an emergency? Or if hospital employees charged with enforcing the quarantine fail to show up for work?

McGaw's memo on Monday also said that the federal plan to respond to pandemic influenza was "in effect."

The Bush administration released the National Strategy For Pandemic Influenza in November 2005; it envisioned closer coordination among federal agencies, the stockpiling and distribution of vaccines and anti-viral drugs, and, if necessary, government-imposed "quarantines" and "limitations on gatherings."

A Defense Department planning document summarizing the military's contingency plan says the Pentagon is prepared to assist in "quarantining groups of people in order to minimize the spread of disease during an influenza pandemic" and aiding in "efforts to restore and maintain order."

California as Liberalism's Laboratory

WASHINGTON -- California's increasingly severe and largely self-inflicted economic crisis will deepen on May 19 if, as is probable and desirable, voters reject most of the ballot measures that were drafted as part of a "solution" to the state's budget deficit. They would make matters worse. National economic revival is being impeded because one-eighth of the nation's population lives in a state that is driving itself into permanent stagnation. California's perennial boast -- that it is the incubator of America's future -- now has an increasingly dark urgency.

Under Arnold Schwarzenegger, the best governor the states contiguous to California have ever had, people and businesses have been relocating in those states. For four consecutive years, more Americans have moved out of California than have moved in. California's business costs are more than 20 percent higher than the average state's. In the last decade, net out-migration of Americans has been 1.4 million. California is exporting talent while importing Mexico's poverty. The latter is not California's fault; the former is.

If, since 1990, state spending increases had been held to the inflation rate plus population growth, the state would have a $15 billion surplus instead of a $42 billion budget deficit, which is larger than the budgets of all but 10 states. Since 1990, the number of state employees has increased by more than a third. In Schwarzenegger's less than six years as governor, per capita government spending, adjusted for inflation, has increased nearly 20 percent.

Liberal orthodoxy has made the state dependent on a volatile source of revenues -- high income tax rates on the wealthy. In 2006, the top 1 percent of earners paid 48 percent of the income taxes. California's income and sales taxes are among the nation's highest, its business conditions among the worst, as measured by 16 variables directly influenced by the Legislature. Unemployment, the nation's fourth highest, is 11.2 percent.

Required by law to balance the budget, the Legislature has "solved" the problem by, among other things, increasing the income, sales, gas and vehicle taxes. This, although one rationale for the federal government's gargantuan "stimulus" was to spare states the need to raise taxes which, in California, will more than vitiate the stimulus.

Proposition 1A would create a complicated -- hence probably porous -- spending cap, and a rainy day fund. Realists, however, do not trust the Legislature to obey the law, which may be why some public employees unions cynically support 1A. Another May 19 proposition, opaquely titled the "Lottery Modernization Act," would authorize borrowing $5 billion from future hypothetical lottery receipts. The title is a measure of the political class' meretriciousness.

If voters pass 1A's hypothetical restraint on government spending, their reward will be two extra years (another $16 billion) of actual income, sales and vehicle tax increases. The increases were supposed to be for just two years. Voters are being warned that if they reject the propositions, there might have to be $14 billion in spending cuts. (Note the $15 billion number four paragraphs above.) Even teachers might be laid off.

California teachers -- the nation's highest paid, with salaries about 25 percent above the national average -- are emblematic of the grip government employees unions have on the state, where 57 percent of government workers are unionized (the national average is 37 percent).

Flinching from serious budget cutting, and from confronting public employees unions, some Californians focus on process questions. They devise candidate-selection rules designed to diminish the role of parties, thereby supposedly making more likely the election of "moderates" amenable to even more tax increases.

But what actually ails California is centrist evasions. The state's crisis has been caused by "moderation," understood as splitting the difference between extreme liberalism and hyperliberalism, a "reasonableness" that merely moderates the speed at which the ever-expanding public sector suffocates the private sector.

California has become liberalism's laboratory, in which the case for fiscal conservatism is being confirmed. The state is a slow learner and hence will remain a drag on the nation's economy. But it will be a net benefit to the nation if the federal government and other state governments profit from California's negative example, which Californians can make more vividly instructive by voting down the propositions on May 19.

Remember the story of the mule that paid attention only after being walloped by a two-by-four? The Democratic-controlled state Legislature is like that. Fortunately, it has handed voters some two-by-fours -- the initiatives. Resounding rejections of them should get Sacramento's attention.

So did many of us. All you drive-by libtards can go sit on a short stick.

That felt good but many men and women have died because the Democrats and their left-wing extremist sycophants hated President Bush so much so that they were willing to run with the meme, "Bush lied and thousands died." Can we say "democrats lied and thousands died" yet?

A while back, I penned a piece entitled, "History Will Vindicate President Bush". It has. And many others as well, including the Fallen.

BUSH WAS RIGHT

Sad as it may be, seeing that there are no Republicans remaining in DC that will capitalize on this not-so-new "new data", this may well be too little too late.

For those of you that know me either on a personal (as in we have met in person) basis or have been reading my articles for at least 6 years or who have listened to my BTR shows for the last 2 years or so, please recall that I informed all that I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that there was in fact a tie-in between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda. Only an ignorant fool or a hate-filled ass would deny the connections.

We watched Al Qaeda flee Pakistan in at least 4 general directions ending up in Pakistan, Iran and Iraq. Some splinter groups went elsewhere but eventually wound up in Iraq. Why? Iraq was their target country seeing that Afghanistan was lost. The Caliphate had to be formed somewhere and if it wasn't going to be in Afghanistan, it would have to be in Iraq because, at the time, Pakistan was unavailable. Pakistan is now available, thanks to the Obamatrons. It's hard to hide facts.

Gateway Pundit and Flopping Aces reported this news a few days ago and I refrained for reasons I choose not to go into at this moment. I had also read it in the New York slimes as well and wondered why the Lame Stream couldn't bring themselves to report this development.

WASHINGTON - Wall Street is not going to play as dominant a role in the economy as regulations reduce “some of the massive leveraging and the massive risk-taking that had become so common,” President Barack Obama says.

The changes in the role of Wall Street and the huge profits that came from that risk-taking could mean other adjustments as well, Obama said in an interview in this week’s New York Times Magazine.

“That means that more talent, more resources will be going to other sectors of the economy,” he said. “I actually think that’s healthy. We don’t want every single college grad with mathematical aptitude to become a derivatives trader. We want some of them to go into engineering, and we want some of them to be going into computer design.”

The Obama administration is trying to restore more regulations on the financial sector to avoid some of the risk-taking that helped cause the current economic problems.

“Wall Street will remain a big, important part of our economy, just as it was in the ’70s and the ’80s,” he said. “It just won’t be half of our economy.”

Obama said he expects that government efforts to fix the economy will cause long-term changes.

“What I think will change, what I think was an aberration, was a situation where corporate profits in the financial sector were such a heavy part of our overall profitability over the last decade,” he said.

Obama said he’s confident that people will regain trust and confidence in the financial system, but he believes it will take time.

“I think it’s important to understand that some of that wealth was illusory in the first place,” he said.

WASHINGTON — The problem with global warming, some environmentalists believe, is “global warming.
The term turns people off, fostering images of shaggy-haired liberals, economic sacrifice and complex scientific disputes, according to extensive polling and focus group sessions conducted by ecoAmerica, a nonprofit environmental marketing and messaging firm in Washington.

Instead of grim warnings about global warming, the firm advises, talk about “our deteriorating atmosphere.” Drop discussions of carbon dioxide and bring up “moving away from the dirty fuels of the past.” Don’t confuse people with cap and trade; use terms like “cap and cash back” or “pollution reduction refund.”

EcoAmerica has been conducting research for the last several years to find new ways to frame environmental issues and so build public support for climate change legislation and other initiatives. A summary of the group’s latest findings and recommendations was accidentally sent by e-mail to a number of news organizations by someone who sat in this week on a briefing intended for government officials and environmental leaders.

Asked about the summary, ecoAmerica’s president and founder, Robert M. Perkowitz, requested that it not be reported until the formal release of the firm’s full paper later this month, but acknowledged that its wide distribution now made compliance with his request unlikely.

The research directly parallels marketing studies conducted by oil companies, utilities and coal mining concerns that are trying to “green” their images with consumers and sway public policy.

Environmental issues consistently rate near the bottom of public worry, according to many public opinion polls. A Pew Research Center poll released in January found global warming last among 20 voter concerns; it trailed issues like addressing moral decline and decreasing the influence of lobbyists. “We know why it’s lowest,” said Mr. Perkowitz, a marketer of outdoor clothing and home furnishings before he started ecoAmerica, whose activities are financed by corporations, foundations and individuals. “When someone thinks of global warming, they think of a politicized, polarized argument. When you say ‘global warming,’ a certain group of Americans think that’s a code word for progressive liberals, gay marriage and other such issues.”

The answer, Mr. Perkowitz said in his presentation at the briefing, is to reframe the issue using different language. “Energy efficiency” makes people think of shivering in the dark. Instead, it is more effective to speak of “saving money for a more prosperous future.” In fact, the group’s surveys and focus groups found, it is time to drop the term “the environment” and talk about “the air we breathe, the water our children drink.”

“Another key finding: remember to speak in TALKING POINTS aspirational language about shared American ideals, like freedom, prosperity, independence and self-sufficiency while avoiding jargon and details about policy, science, economics or technology,” said the e-mail account of the group’s study.

Mr. Perkowitz and allies in the environmental movement have been briefing officials in Congress and the administration in the hope of using the findings to change the terms of the debate now under way in Washington.

Opponents of legislation to combat global warming are engaged in a similar effort. Trying to head off a cap-and-trade system, in which government would cap the amount of heat-trapping emissions allowed and let industry trade permits to emit those gases, they are coaching Republicans to refer to any such system as a giant tax that would kill jobs. Coal companies are taking out full-page advertisements promising “clean, green coal.” The natural gas industry refers to its product as “clean fuel green fuel.” Oil companies advertise their investments in alternative energy.

Robert J. Brulle of Drexel University, an expert on environmental communications, said ecoAmerica’s campaign was a mirror image of what industry and political conservatives were doing. “The form is the same; the message is just flipped,” he said. “You want to sell toothpaste, we’ll sell it. You want to sell global warming, we’ll sell that. It’s the use of advertising techniques to manipulate public opinion.”

He said the approach was cynical and, worse, ineffective. “The right uses it, the left uses it, but it doesn’t engage people in a face-to-face manner,” he said, “and that’s the only way to achieve real, lasting social change.”

Frank Luntz, a Republican communications consultant, prepared a strikingly similar memorandum in 2002, telling his clients that they were losing the environmental debate and advising them to adjust their language. He suggested referring to themselves as “conservationists” rather than “environmentalists,” and emphasizing “common sense” over scientific argument.

And, Mr. Luntz and Mr. Perkowitz agree, “climate change” is an easier sell than “global warming.”

Pelosi: Utterly Contemptible

WASHINGTON -- Torture is an impermissible evil. Except under two circumstances. The first is the ticking time bomb. An innocent's life is at stake. The bad guy you have captured possesses information that could save this life. He refuses to divulge. In such a case, the choice is easy. Even John McCain, the most admirable and estimable torture opponent, says openly that in such circumstances, "You do what you have to do." And then take the responsibility.

Some people, however, believe you never torture. Ever. They are akin to conscientious objectors who will never fight in any war under any circumstances, and for whom we correctly show respect by exempting from war duty. But we would never make one of them Centcom commander. Private principles are fine, but you don't entrust such a person with the military decisions upon which hinges the safety of the nation. It is similarly imprudent to have a person who would abjure torture in all circumstances making national security decisions upon which depends the protection of 300 million countrymen.

The second exception to the no-torture rule is the extraction of information from a high-value enemy in possession of high-value information likely to save lives. This case lacks the black-and-white clarity of the ticking time bomb scenario. We know less about the length of the fuse or the nature of the next attack. But we do know the danger is great. We know we must act but have no idea where or how -- and we can't know that until we have information. Catch-22.
Under those circumstances, you do what you have to do. And that includes waterboarding.

Did it work? The current evidence is fairly compelling. George Tenet said that the "enhanced interrogation" program alone yielded more information than everything gotten from "the FBI, the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency put together."

Michael Hayden, CIA director after waterboarding had been discontinued, writes (with former Attorney General Michael Mukasey) that "as late as 2006 ... fully half of the government's knowledge about the structure and activities of al-Qaeda came from those interrogations." Even Dennis Blair, Obama's director of national intelligence, concurs that these interrogations yielded "high value information." So much for the lazy, mindless assertion that torture never works.

Asserts Blair's predecessor, Mike McConnell, "We have people walking around in this country that are alive today because this process happened." Of course, the morality of torture hinges on whether at the time the information was important enough, the danger great enough and our blindness about the enemy's plans severe enough to justify an exception to the moral injunction against torture.

Judging by Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress who were informed at the time, the answer seems to be yes. In December 2007, after a Washington Post report that she had knowledge of these procedures and did not object, she admitted that she'd been "briefed on interrogation techniques the administration was considering using in the future."

Today Pelosi protests "we were not -- I repeat -- were not told that waterboarding or any other of these other enhanced interrogation methods were used." She imagines that this distinction between past and present, Clintonian in its parsing, is exonerating.

On the contrary. It is self-indicting. If you are told about torture that has already occurred, you might justify silence on the grounds that what's done is done and you are simply being used in a post-facto exercise to cover the CIA's rear end. The time to protest torture, if you really are as outraged as you now pretend to be, is when the CIA tells you what it is planning to do "in the future."

But Pelosi did nothing. No protest. No move to cut off funding. No letter to the president or the CIA chief or anyone else saying "Don't do it."

On the contrary, notes Porter Goss, then chairman of the House intelligence committee: The members briefed on these techniques did not just refrain from objecting, "on a bipartisan basis, we asked if the CIA needed more support from Congress to carry out its mission against al-Qaeda."

More support, mind you. Which makes the current spectacle of self-righteous condemnation not just cowardly but hollow. It is one thing to have disagreed at the time and said so. It is utterly contemptible, however, to have been silent then and to rise now "on a bright, sunny, safe day in April 2009" (the words are Blair's) to excoriate those who kept us safe these harrowing last eight years.

Joi: "The Data decoded just fine, but these libs are so disorganized that it takes a while to figure out what any of this means. Have either of you two ever heard of e-worms?

Joi: apparently there are two R & D facilities. One in Vermont. But it relies on data from the main facility. From the looks of this intel they don't store e-worms on site. The other one is located at an abandoned military lab in southern California just outside of Los Angeles. Chances are there is a large underground facility. I'll get our resident expert [12iggymom?] to locate blueprints and maps of the facility. Dispatching a VTOL to your location for pick up as soon as CT is safe.

Why I declined to meet with the President’s Detention Policy Task Force.

I did something today that I’ve never done before. The Department of Justice, which I proudly served for a quarter century as an assistant U.S. attorney and a deputy U.S. marshal, asked me for help, and I declined. Actually, what I declined to do was attend a meeting. My hope is that the dissent I am registering — to the administration’s disastrous policies of releasing trained terrorists and threatening prosecution against government lawyers — will help the department and the Obama administration, even if they don’t want to hear it.

At the start of his term, President Obama directed Attorney General Eric Holder to head up the President’s Detention Policy Task Force to study detention, trial, and other issues relating to alien enemy combatants — though that venerable law-of-war term has been purged in favor of “individuals captured or apprehended in connection with armed conflicts and counterterrorism operations.” The attorney general has assigned lawyers in the department’s Counterterrorism Division to organize the effort. Those lawyers invited me, among other former and current prosecutors experienced in terrorism and national-security matters, to attend a roundtable session next week, to sort through the vexing legal challenges of modern international terrorism.

I’ve declined the invitation. It pained me to do it. I’ve always believed enforcing our laws and defending our nation are duties of citizenship, not ideology. My conservative political views aside, I regularly make myself available to liberal and conservative groups, to Democrats and Republicans, if they think tapping my national-security or law-enforcement experience would be beneficial.

This time, though, I had to say no. As I explain to Attorney General Holder in a letter, which was posted this morning on the website of the National Review Institute, I declined for two reasons.

First, President Obama and Attorney General Holder have created an untenable situation for lawyers asked to advise the government on policy matters.

Former Justice Department attorneys John Yoo (now a law professor at Berkeley) and Jay Bybee (now a federal appeals-court judge in California), as well as other government attorneys, were asked during the emergency conditions that followed the 9/11 attacks to advise Bush administration policymakers on U.S. interrogation law. They did that in good faith and, despite the fact that it’s now de rigueur to castigate them, quite reasonably (as I’ve argued in an online Federalist Society debate, see here). For their service to our country, they are now being tormented by the Obama administration with both a criminal investigation and an ethics inquiry by Justice’s Office of Professional Responsibility. (There have even been calls on the left for Judge Bybee’s impeachment, which — even if he had done something wrong years earlier as a Justice Department lawyer — would be absurd: The Constitution reserves judicial impeachment for misconduct committed during the judge’s tenure on the bench, and Bybee is an excellent judge.)

A little over a week ago, the Obama administration recklessly revealed publicly (i.e., to al-Qaeda) the details of enhanced interrogation tactics used by the CIA against top-tier terrorists. The decision to employ these tactics was not made by Yoo, Bybee, or other government lawyers. They did not look to press these practices on government agents. Rather, the CIA initiated the controversy by asking for clarification of its authority. President Bush and his top national-security officials, including CIA Director George Tenet, were responsible for making the policy. The attorneys merely gave their best legal advice — the policymakers didn’t have to follow it, and it was the CIA, not the lawyers, that conducted questioning and made judgments about how it was affecting the terrorists.

Yet President Obama’s antiwar base is in a froth — so much so that he has unleashed his Justice Department to criminalize political disputes after claiming for weeks that he did not want to do this. And the president is being a bully about it. He obviously doesn’t want to incur the wrath of leaking spooks, so he has said CIA agents won’t be investigated (the right result reached for self-interested reasons). He hasn’t worked up the nerve to go after his predecessor, who ordered the policy, and Tenet — a Democrat and one of Bush’s Clinton-holdovers — is another politically inconvenient target. That leaves the lawyers — relatively unknown and thus easily demonized — as the feast for the piranhas.

Any experienced prosecutor would know there is no criminal case here. And let’s assume you think the lawyers gave bad advice — as many say they do, particularly if they haven’t read the memos. Bad legal advice given in good faith is not an ethical violation. There’s not a lawyer in America who hasn’t given bad legal advice at some point — certainly not in the government. It is disgraceful to target these lawyers for this kind of persecution, to force them to retain counsel to defend their wartime service to the country, and to put them in fear of criminal, professional, and financial repercussions. It should be offensive to all people of good will, regardless of their politics or of where they come out on the explosive issue of coercive interrogation. We can arrive at a sound policy, or not, without demonizing our adversaries as crooks and cads.

But that’s not how the attorney general sees it. For all his confirmation-hearing talk about learning his lesson from the Marc Rich debacle and being strong enough to stand up to a president who tries to politicize the Justice Department, Holder took the buck that Obama decided stops at the Justice Department. The attorney general dutifully promised to “follow the evidence wherever it takes us.”

That puts every lawyer who is asked to advise the government on notice: If the Holder Justice Department decides your good-faith advice promoted what it considers illegal activity, you could face criminal prosecution or ruinous ethical charges. That turns out to be a problem for me.

The government has asked for my legal advice on detainees. And worse, I already know that Holder thinks the advice I would give counsels illegal activity. That is, I believe alien enemy combatants should be detained, until the conclusion of hostilities, at Guantanamo Bay (or someplace just like it). Yet, in a provocative speech in Germany on Wednesday, the attorney general framed that notion as a violation of “the rule of law.”
Continuing the new administration’s unbecoming propensity to vilify its predecessor, Holder told his audience, “Nothing symbolizes our [adminstration’s] new course more than our decision to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay. . . . President Obama believes, and I strongly agree, that Guantanamo has come to represent a time and an approach that we want to put behind us: a disregard for our centuries-long respect for the rule of law.”

Was Holder just pandering, as he was when he called Americans “cowards” on the issue of race? Perhaps. From my perspective, though, I’m a lawyer who’s been asked to give advice to the government by an administration that says such advice could lead to criminal investigation and professional discipline. And although the advice I would give is firmly rooted in the laws of war, and was reaffirmed by the Supreme Court in the 2004 Hamdi decision, this administration regards such detention as running afoul of the rule of law. Thus, as I wrote to the attorney general:

Given your policy of conducting ruinous criminal and ethics investigations of lawyers over the advice they offer the government, and your specific position that the wartime detention I would endorse is tantamount to a violation of law, it makes little sense for me to attend the Task Force meeting. After all, my choice would be to remain silent or risk jeopardizing myself.

The second reason for declining the Justice Department’s request is that the exercise known as the “President’s Detention Policy Task Force” is a farce. The administration has already settled on a detainee policy: It is simply going to release trained jihadists. Holder said as much in his Germany speech. In the irrational world he inhabits, the existence of Guantanamo Bay, where dangerous terrorists cannot harm anyone, is more of a security threat than jihadists roaming free, plotting to menace and murder us. That’s why the administration just released Binyam Mohammed, who conspired with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and “Dirty Bomber” Jose Padilla to execute post-9/11 bombings in American cities. That’s why Holder will soon announce (perhaps as early as today) that the Chinese Uighur detainees — who’ve been affiliated with a designated terrorist organization and who’ve received paramilitary training at al-Qaeda camps — will not only be set free in the United States but will, according to National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair, subsist on the support of the American taxpayer.

For all their talk about “the rule of law,” President Obama and Attorney General Holder have to know this policy is illegal. In 2005, Congress provided in the REAL ID Act that aliens who’ve been affiliated with a terrorist organization or who’ve received paramilitary training (which has been a staple of virtually every jihadist plot against the United States) are excludable from the United States. Moreover, even if the administration were not riding roughshod over federal immigration law, it is endangering the American people. The sophistry required to believe that having people who want to kill us locked up is more perilous than loosing them on civilian populations is so absurd it nearly defies description.

To satisfy his antiwar base and to put paid to commitments offered by his top campaign advisers (like Eric Holder), President Obama promised to close Guantanamo Bay within a year, despite having no plan for what to do about the terrorists there, many of whom cannot be tried under the standards of the civilian justice system. Military proceedings are anathema to the administration — many of whose lawyers either represented the Gitmo detainees or come from firms that did. (Holder’s former firm, for example, brags on its website that it represents detainees in their wartime lawsuits against the American people.) And the administration is evidently not very interested in exploring novel systems of preventive detention, such as my proposal for a “national security court,” which would require extensive legislative work. Instead, the Obama policy is simply to release our enemies — knowing many are certain to return to the jihad — if that’s what it takes to comply with the president’s promise to close Gitmo by January.

Consequently, the President’s Detention Policy Task Force is not an effort to arrive at the best counterterrorism policy. It is an effort to justify a bad policy that has already been made — to be able to tell the American people that this suicidal approach was arrived at in consultation with experienced terrorism prosecutors and national-security officials.

As I told the attorney general in my letter, “I am powerless to stop the president, as he takes these reckless steps, from touting his Detention Policy Task Force as a demonstration of his national security seriousness. But I can decline to participate in the charade.”

Writing of the ruling classes of Latin America dulls the senses in the same way that writing of the ruling classes of this nation dulls the senses. After a while one craves a rest from all the idiocy and sham. But not yet.

It is an error to equate the rulers with the ruled in any case. Just as it is laughable to hear some Latin American despot proclaim his “love of the people” and then watch as he strips them of liberty and wealth, it is laughable to hear some American politician say he was elected to do “the peoples’ work” and then take cash and favors from special interests. The mentality is the same.

It is also an error to think that when our ruling classes travel abroad they are going to investigate differing views and so increase their own knowledge of the world. Not so. They travel abroad and spend time with those who possess exactly the same opinions as they have. Some US senator will spend a few days in some Latin American capital and then boast that he understands how Latin Americans think—all 400 million of them no less—when the reality is that he talked to those with the same world view as his own. His increase in knowledge is exactly zero. But the food was great.

This is really nothing but narcissism, and most internationally known politicians and intellectuals practice it. Their travels abroad are just a form of self-love. This is the point of all those UN conferences, all those Davos meetings, all those IMF affairs, all those World Bank get-togethers—they exist solely to give the ruling classes of the world a place where they can hobnob with their own kind. One would think with all their education, all their experience, all their speaking tours, all their scholarly articles and all their published books that they would actually be able to solve some of the world’s problems. But no, the problems go on and so do all those overseas gab fests of the ruling class.

As for the actual people of those foreign lands, they exist as just another backdrop for all that yakking and pontificating and socializing that go on at those international events, all of which claim to speak for “the people of the world.” The reality of the thing is that “the people of the world” have no voice whatsoever. It is entirely absurd when these intellectuals babble with presumed authority about Cuba or Africa or about any foreign land outside of what was once called “Western Civilization.” In reality, Cuba and Africa are mere geological expressions. When one speaks of Cuba in the context of current affairs, one is really speaking only of one Cuban, Castro by name. When one speaks of Africa, one is really speaking of a few thousand noisome members of the ruling classes there. The same is true of Latin America.

So very few of the world’s ruling classes know any common people at all, and at any rate these rulers came to power with no input from what was once called “the masses.” That phrase itself reveals much about the mentality of the ruling class. It sees all the world’s teeming billions as just some undifferentiated glob of humanity, and that there exists a few above them who can speak for them and who have the right to rule them. Such higher life forms are called “the vanguard of the proletariat” in Leninist phraseology.

Certainly Obama and his clique are of this type. All of their ideas are shared among their sorts here and abroad. There is nothing—absolutely nothing—new or unique among them. Obama himself admits to this, but in ways he cannot understand. He read and studied exactly those things in college that are read and studied by the intellectual classes of the world—all those Marxist “critiques” of this and that and all those books by Frantz Fanon and his type. Obama listened to that same nonsense spewed forth for 20 years at the feet of Jeremiah Wright.

His life has been fully marinated in the world view of those who hate capitalism, call the US the source of much of the world’s evil, believe the Jews to be the main problem of the Middle East, see themselves as most qualified to govern “the people”, equate opposition with heresy and despise traditional religions and values. They are absolute and total creatures of government and could not survive outside of it. Indeed, this is the reason why all of their proposals involve government. The greater the size of government, the more power they have. The fact that liberty is reduced for the citizenry is irrelevant, since the ruing classes will always have the freedom to do what they wish.

Obama and his sorts exist in some bounteous ether where taxes, small cars, high gas prices, reduced incomes and the toil of daily life affect only those who do the actual work of the nation. They award themselves beautiful homes, large and fancy automobiles, excellent food and citizen subsidized foreign travel. Indeed, their entire lives are subsidized by the taxes they impose upon the masses. And with the increase of government—which really is an increase of job prospects of the ruling classes and their families—the numbers of these types will increase, as will the taxes imposed to maintain such sumptuous lifestyles of these rich, famous and powerful.

The only creative thing—if that is the correct term—about Obama is that he is a particularly feral man. He is without shame, demonstrates no particular honor toward anyone or anything and has no use for the truth. It is remarkable that he can say X on one day and deny the next day that he had said X—and all the while working to impose Y. Naturally his media and intellectual audience clap and cheer, for Obama is only doing what they would do had they his competence and ferocity. Obama is at once their hero, their lover and their god. They see in him their own reflections writ large.

The grand design of all these teeming intellectuals all over the globe is to create a world system where they and their type sit at all the tables of governance, control all the levers of power and distribute all the world’s wealth. Obama sees himself at the head of this motley throng. It is obvious that these types have no particular loyalty to any particular geographic area. Obama himself has nothing particularly American about him. Search all you like but in him you will find no Jefferson or Madison. He is really a citizen of that transnational body of intellectuals that imagines the entire world as its proper stage and the rest of us as mere bit players in its grandiose drama. The members of this elite regard the entire earth as part of their rightful inheritance and desire a world government composed of themselves.

And they just might get one. There are three things that could stop them—the US military, American citizens with guns, and the people who belong to the God of Christ and of Abraham. Naturally the transnational elites hate all three of these. Thus their work to prosecute US military personnel; thus their desire to impose gun control across the globe; thus their spreading of abortion in every corner of every land; thus their promotion of anti-Jewish hatred at every forum.

It does not surprise those with eyes wide open that Obama is behind every one of these movements. He may not be “the one we have been waiting for,” but he is one of those men whose very existence prepares the world for a being whom the Christians most certainly have been waiting for.

We have been warned.

1) the US military,
2) American citizens with guns,
3) and the people who belong to the God of Christ and of Abraham.

I am pleased to announce the completion of my first book, A Pastoral Letter to the Captives, and other works, an anthology of historical hostage accounts from the late 17th century, the peak of the Barbary Pirate era. It includes a Foreword from our Chaplain, Pastor Ed Boston of Do the Right Thing and co-host of the Pray for the Hostages daily radio show. It will be available in May from Exagorazo Press, the publishing division of the As A Matter of Faith online ministry.

In this book I present letters and reports from the late 1600's, but the parallels to the modern piracy crisis are striking. Here is an excerpt from the Preface:

Imagine the scene: the crew of an unarmed merchant ship looks on in horror as their vessel is approached and boarded by a gang of pirates, guns blazing. The pirates herd their human cargo into smaller boats and head for shore, where the crew members will languish in slavery while they await rescue or ransom or death.

This was a common scene 300 years ago, when the Barbary Pirates ruled the seas, and it is a scene that has changed little in the past three centuries. Where ships once dreaded passing through the Straits of Gibraltar from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, modern mariners now face a similar situation in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, vital waterways for vessels traveling between Asia and Europe and North America.

In the late 1600s, Moroccan King Moulay Ismail oversaw a reign of terror that included the abduction of more than 25,000 Europeans, mostly unarmed merchant seamen, who were then used as slaves to build his new capital city, Meknes. Today's pirates are not necessarily state-sponsored, as were the Barbary Pirates, but are rapidly approaching that status as they funnel money from ransom payments into armed insurgencies in weak states like Somalia.

In this book, we present hostage accounts from the late 17th century, including the story of an arduous escape from Moulay Ismail's brutal captivity. We also see the encouraging letter American preacher Cotton Mather wrote to a group of captured New England seamen, and the joyful sermon he preached to celebrate their release five years later. Although the hostage narratives describe the horror and desperation of this terrible condition, they also speak of the strong faith that enabled the captives to survive their ordeal. It is this hope and faith that we wish to emphasize, particularly the power of prayer to sustain the hostages and to bring them their eventual deliverance.

Biden: Avoid Planes, Trains, Automobiles

The vice president says if a family member asked him about traveling, he'd advise staying away from public transportation to avoid swine flu.

President Obama may be warning Americans not to panic over the flu outbreak that is spreading across the world, but Vice President Biden didn't tamp down the hyperbole Thursday, saying he would tell his family not to get on a plane right now or go in any confined space.

Speaking on NBC's "Today," Biden, a longtime Amtrak rider who has commuted for decades daily from Delaware to Washington, D.C., said he wouldn't advise family necessarily against going to Mexico, the source of the H1N1 outbreak, but he wouldn't tell them to get into any small area like a subway car, automobile, classroom or airplane.

"I would tell members of my family, and I have, I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places right now," Biden said. "It's not that its going to Mexico, it's that you are in a confined aircraft when one person sneezes, it goes everywhere through the aircraft. That's me."

He added that his advice is offered as a means to slow down the spread of the flu, which has now resulted in infections in 11 states and 100 schools being shut down around the nation.

"I would not be at this point, if they had another way of transportation, suggesting they ride the subway. From my perspective, it relates to is mitigation. If you're out in the middle of a field and someone sneezes that's one thing. If you're in a closed aircraft, a closed container, closed car, a closed classroom, it's a different thing," Biden said.

The year is 2009 and our great country has been taken over by the radical Agents of Chaos. However, the evil empire is about to learn that a super secret organization known as Freedom Village is working behind the scenes to preserve truth, justice and the American Way of Life.

Border Boy and Cyber Pastor are supported by a highly trained squad of black operatives known as Stanger’s group. Stanger’s is one of several black ops groups used for any and all clandestine missions requiring stealth and mission precision. They operate independently but frequently assist our heroes when not elsewhere on the world stage.

BB and CP needed to get off the WH grounds and rendezvous with The Conservative Trucker who was to be parked in his big rig on the corner waiting to complete the extraction. CP frantically reaches for his offering plate before AGENT SMOKER is aware of their absence. CP has a newly improved offering plate which has anti-gravity hovering capabilities and for just the few seconds they needed, could lift the two of them over the fence.

Cyber Pastor shot the plate into the air while our duo gripped the cable that extended from it. The anti gravity technology is still very new, and they hoped it could not only lift them but carry them in the right direction to be over that fence before it failed.

Gripping the cable with one hand each, CP and BB felt their feet leave the ground way too slowly for BB’s nerves. As CP whispered a prayer, BB whispered something not so prayerful. [chuckle] The plate’s lift was only getting them up about 3 feet up and there it stayed….what the heck is going on BB gritted his teeth in total frustration… and then reached up with his other hand and yanked-hard….it seems a peace dove escaped from a cage that some hippie code pinker brought to the party; and the bird found the hovering offering plate a nice place to perch. Yanking on the cable did not budge the bird so BB pulled out his revolver and all CP heard was the sound of the silenced pistol. It was kind of cool though, seeing all those pink feathers go “poof”. The offering plate immediately regained lift and they were over the fence and on the ground. As CP recovered the offering plate, not wanting to leavetheir technology in enemy hands, they took off running for TCT’s truck..

In TCT's truck is the main uplink for the satellite along with various weapons such as plasma guns used to turn the Agents of Chaos into glowing heaps of dust, a high power EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) device which could be deployed from inside the trucks trailer and used to shut down electronic systems, dart guns used to incapacitate but not kill various players like innocent civilians, grenade launchers, rocket guns to blow big holes in things, and what has become known as the discombobulator gun or the DC "No Forensics" Gun.

That one shoots out a pulse of microwaves 10,000 times more poweful than a kitchen microwave. It literally fries anything in it's path and if it hits a human it turns them into little bubbly nuggets like fried chicken. Although rarely used, actual results are not well known so just about anything is possible. If shot at a helicopter for instance the helicopter completely disintigrates into molten pieces of metal and the bubbly chicken nuggets. Quite spectacular but very deadly.

CP and BB have the digital recording devices stored in the heels of their shoes with all the recently obtained data. The recording devices are very small. Not much bigger than a quarter. About the same size as a computer motherboard batteryand able to store massive amounts of data.

CP and BB had arrived at the truck. All that remained was Stanger's squad to launch the Diversion. "Where in the heck is that guy?, asked BB about TCT?

“Yeah, why would he just leave the truck” asked CP? “This doesn’t make sense.”

They jump in the cab only to find an illegal alien in the process of hot wiring the truck to steal it at that very moment. TCT is nowhere to be found.

BB looks at the Illegal and says "who the hell are you?"

The illegal says: [something in spanish] And who did you expect? Taco Bell?

CP says: Border Boy please don't kill him!

Several minutes later the illegal alien is dressed in BB's server outfit and is unconscious hanging by his collar from the fence just inside the white house grounds with a note that reads: "Dear Secret Service, You see what I did to that dove, wait and see what I do to the president."

Border Boy returns to the truck:

CP: Where the heck is TCT anyway?

BB: I have no idea but we need to get this rig moving RIGHT NOW.

CP: "You don't think Chaos has him do you?"

BB: "At this point I'm not sure what to think."

"He certainly wouldn't have let a bunch yahoos from Chaos sneak up on him. And I don't believe he would have gone down without a fight."

CP: "Yeah. Good point. We didn't see any evidence of a struggle."

BB turning to CP: "You think he just wandered off lookin' for a cup o' coffee or something ?"

CP: "Nah. Not TCT. He knows how important this mission is."

BB: "Well when Stanger and his guys show up we better go look for him. We ain't leavin' nobody behind."

CP: "Amen to that BB. But where could he have gone?"

TCT has been kidnapped by a large group of women calling themselves the Pink Ladies. These females are headed to a convention for hookers and just happened upon TCT standing outside his rig stretching his legs. They injected him with some kind of drug while standing there talking to the ladies, most likely Love Potion No.12LUV. Skantily clad, TCT was completely mesmerized by them as any man would be, making it easy to get close enough to give him the dope.

The Pink Ladies, laughing and twittering like a bunch of school girls, hustled ol' TCT off for a night of unknown events in the nearby convention center. Lucky guy....or perhaps not.

CP and BB are gonna be pissed.

Meanwhile the alarms had not yet gone off on the WH grounds.

Things were quiet but that was about to change when Agent Smoker discovered the two servers were no longer outside...they could not be found anywhere. More guests were arriving and AS needed his servers.

Stanger, standing in the shadows about a block away was ready with his squad of operators to begin the diversionary strike. That, set to begin when the WH alarm system went active.

CP and BB get the rig going and set off to the GPS coordinated rally point. That is the point where all operators would get aboard and the operation would then proceed to the extraction point not far away for pick up by helicopter.

As they began driving all hell broke loose on the WH grounds when the illegal was found hanging on the fence, still quite unconscious.

When BB puts somebody to sleep they stay that way for a very long time...haha.

Agent Smoker is going nuts screamimg, "This isn't who I'm looking for dammit!" The agents of Chaos were in disarray at the moment with all the big shots arriving, stretch limo's pulling in and out, high brow ladies in all their finery strutting like over ripe peacocks up the steps to the WH grand ball room and everybody smiling for the hundreds of cameras lighting up the night with flash bulbs.

At that moment Stanger begins 'Operation Diversion'. Shooting pulses of EMP at those expensive limo's as they drove out causing them to stop dead in the road. Major traffic jams ensued causing more confusion and chaos. Grenade launchers lobbing large explosives filled with noxious gas that smelled of burned chicken feathers and shooting multi-colored sparklers off in every direction on the WH lawn.

Many of the party goers just thought it was part of the welcoming until the odor got to their nostrils.

"Oh look Martha, rainbow sparklers. How wonderful" one guest exclaimed. "Yes Harold. Very thoughtful indeed but that odor is just disgusting. Peee-uw," Martha said.

Little did they know that the noxious gas was actually a concentrated form of nitrous oxide, laughing gas, that some speculated came from earthworm flatulance. The actual harvesting and processing of this gas was a very well kept secret.

Agent Smoker was a nanosecond from having major conniptions by this time. All he could do was run around in circles muttering something about 2 lost servers, a Mexican assassin and a dead peace dove. Poor Agent Smoker, in the midst of the havoc which was flawlessly executed by Stanger's group, he just kept saying: "Black Moon is going to have my balls for breakfast."
